Bruce Stephens wins Big Country Idol singing contest.
I remember as a kid..Dad would take my brother and I..and my sisters to the Base Theatre...at that time it only costs 25 cents...Every one would stand for the Pledge of Allegiance!!! Looking at the Big Screen...I saw the biggest Flag...rolling from one side of the screen to the other! I still get Goose Bumps thinking about it!!! When I look at the Flag...I see that each star represents one of the states that makes up our great country...the blue surrounding the stars represents the deep blue oceans and sky we defend and protect every day...the thirteen stripes...seven red...six white...represents the thirteen original colonies we all learned about in our history class. The red signifying the blood we lost protecting freedom...the white showing the purity and unstained loyalty of our pledge of allegiance! So...when I look at the flag...I see a symbol of freedom...a symbol, however, that is meaningless...and a freedom that is lost...if not defended and protected from one generation to the next!!!!!!!! Tsgt.William B. Stephens,U.S.A.F. RetiredRaised a Military Brat, whose Father was in the United States Air Force. Bruce has two sisters and a brother and as a child has seen the Azores, England and several Air Force Bases State side. One of which was Keesler A.F.B. Biloxi MS. Where his father retired from the Air Force. He was raised in Ocean Springs MS. On the Golden Gulf Coast . After graduating from Ocean Springs High School he briefly worked at Ingals shipbuilding in Pascagoula MS. before joining the United States Air Force. His first assignment was Eglin A.F.B. FL. and during this time he realized Country Music was something he had to be a part of. His biggest influence was Harold Lloyd Jenkins or as most people know him as "The best friend a song ever had" Mr. Conway Twitty!!! The first time performing on stage was in Destin FL. at the Green Knight when Phil Calhoun, a member of the band, told Bruce it was Jam night and would he like to sing? They called him up next set and previously everyone was dancing to the band. Bruce started singing and not one person was dancing and every eye was on Bruce and not one sound from the audience. Naturally Bruce thought they hated him. He couldnt just walk off the stage, so he finished the song and said thank you and began to walk off stage when the audience exploded in applause. Before he could reach his seat Phil Calhoun yelled for Bruce to come back up and sing another one. After that night Bruce was hooked. Phil told him not to worry about just coming back on Jam night, your welcome to come back any night you want to sing.
