Valentina Smurf is the all-around-brain of the village. Although she acts as though she was second-in-command behind Papa Smurf, this isn't the case and even Papa Smurf doesn't seem very fond of her sanctimonious attitude. She is a smurf that can be distinguished from the others because she wears thick glasses as she is extremely short-sighted. In fact, in the original Belgian version, she is called "Specs Smurf" (and, more seldom, "Lecturing Smurf"). Valentina Smurf is an avid reader and keeps a lot of books in his house (mostly his quotations). Fancying himself as being very close to Papa Smurf, she is quite arrogant and often lectures smurfs who don't behave, and threatens to tattle on them to Papa Smurf. Loquacious, she often uses big words that she himself either made up or doesn't know what they really mean. A lot of the other smurfs dislike her, and when she enters into a long lecturing, some frustrated smurf often angrily smashes her on the head with a big wooden mallet. Frequently, in the cartoon, after her blathering or posturing have gone too far, she is thrown a long distance (typically by Hefty Smurf), and always lands square on his head, usually outside of the village.
It is now argued by some that Peyo meant to spread communist ideas through smurf cartoons. S.M.U.R.F. is translated by supporters of this theory as "Socialist Men Under Red Father" or "Soviet Men Under Red Father", however both of these theories disregard the fact that the Smurfs' original name is "Schtroumpfs", "Smurf" being the international translation after the fact. The Red Father in the cartoon is Papa Smurf, who wears a red hat and trousers. It is also noted that Papa Smurf might be a representation of Karl Marx because of his similar looking beard.
An analysis of the symbolism of the smurfs also can point to that theory. Smurfs live in a village with rules similar to that of a communist society including sharing of everything by everyone, absence of currency, equality (symbolized by similar clothing), everyone more or less serving a functional and necessary purpose in the community, etc. Gargamel is said to represent capitalism with particular emphasis being made on his greediness, especially his desire to transform the smurfs into gold.
