Isabella Santos is the conservative matriarch of the Santos Clan. She relocated the family from Texas to Pine Valley in order to be closer to daughters Maria and Julia. Isabella's most enduring trait is her disapproval of her children's choices. She is always watching out for her children pushing them in the "right" direction sometimes to the chagrin of the five little Santoses.
Isabella played her first major role with Maria and Edmund Grey's wedding which she blessed. She was glad to see her doctor daughter find such a lovely man. Husband Hector died not long after leaving Isabella to keep watch over the kids. Julia was getting more and more involved with street rat Noah Keefer. Isabella worried for her daughter and told her so. Julia remained close to Noah and eventually, they wed. Isabella thought that maybe Julia has made the right choice until Julia and Noah where forced into the witness protection program, and Isabella had to say goodbye to her beautiful daughter.
Isabella became happy with the news that daughter Anita had arranged for Maria and Edmund to adopt a baby boy from friend Kelsey Jeffeson. She welcomed the child with open arms. Maria would again bless Isabella with another grandchild, this time a grand-daughter. Unfortunately, later that year, Isabella believed she had lost Maria in an airplane crash.
Devastated, Isabella found the will to live on. Anita moved with Bobby Warner to Chicago for school. She put Rosa in an all girls school to protect her. She kept a close eye on Edmund and never approved of any of his relationships post Maria. Son Mateo had enough trouble in his life with ex-wife Raquel Dion and son Max's presence in Pine Valley. Isabella preferred new wife Hayley Vaughan and was afraid that Raquel would tear them apart. Luckily, Raquel's threats where empty and short lived.
She let Rosa out into public school for her senior year only to have her get involved with a boy in the teen drug ring. Mateo and Hayley gave birth to baby Lorenzo Hector and named the boy after Mateo's father. At "Enzo"s baptism, Proteus put a bag of cocaine in Rosa's purse. With the drug ring hitting to close to home, Mateo opted to send Rosa to Texas and keep Isabella at a distance. Enzo began to have liver problems and no one in the Santos clan could save him, except for the late Maria. Isabella began to give up hope, until a miracle arrived.
At Edmund and Brooke's wedding, Maria showed up alive. Isabella was so happy to see her little girl, but was devested with the revelation she had no memory of her past life. Later that year, Mateo and Hayley had to relocate to Los Angeles for Hayley's job. Again, Isabella had to say goodbye to one of her children. Mateo's last act in Pine Valley was a mini reunion between Julia, Maria and Isabella on Christmas day. Isabella was more then happy to see her girls back together.
For a while, as Maria did not remember loving Edmund, she engaged in a relationship with Aidan Devane. Isabella spoke out against a mother leaving her children and husband. She was devastated and decided to make a break from Maria. When Maria finally regained her memory she told Isabella who began to cry and could not make out words for the joy she was feeling.
