There are so many, first off my mom who is the incarnate of "Mahalia Jackson" I grew up in a family that loves music, all kinds. We would listen to it all and then we would sing and what ever part you got you sang. As a kid I was very into Streisand, and Pat Benatar they inspired me to hit those high notes. Talk about broad ends of the spectrum. No one told us you could only sing one genre/style or only sing alto or soprano. I grew up singing it all. In college as a music major we also studied it all and sang it all. Music is my life - all of it, it is who I am.
As far as other artist, I have been mostly influenced by the incredible and talented people that God has allowed me to rub elbows with and create friendships around the world. It is their voices I hear crying out to God in song, it is their music I cling to when I need inspiration. From pulpits, prison and stages there are too many influences to list. Anyone that is obedient and allows the Holy Spirit to Minster through them influences me. We serve an awesome God!
Sounds Like: Judith Baker, been told I sound like Brooklyn Tab Singers, Sandi Patty, Darlene Czech, Vicki Yohe, Janna Long or Jody McBrayer (Avalon), Mahilia Jackson (when I sing Negro Spirituals or low) and Mandissa - what a complement! Have even been duped a "Gospel Mariah Carey" I love to make a Joyful Noise to the Lord!
Here is a note from a producer I do studio work for:
"Judith has a lovely solo voice, but she really amazes me when she does her background singing. There is this miraculous transition into sounding like other singers when her voice is stacked in "the train" sound.." Doug Gazlay, Atlanta, GA
For the record I am just a humble gal with a big voice and talent that God gave me and I intend to use every bit of it for His Glory! God is amazng and He had given me an increddible gift. C.S. Lews said it best - "To whom much is given, much is required;" or in the words of Spiderman's uncle Ben "with great power comes great responsibility."
I do not take this incredible calling on my life lightly - what is your calling? Who do people say you sound like? What will little children remember you for?
