There is nothing new under the sun, but there are a lot of old things we don't know - Ambrose Bierce

About Me

i'm erik. hello. i'm 25. i graduated from college in 2004, and i currently have a job in my field of study, but not the sort of job i'm aiming for in the long term. i live with my parents because its too expensive to live on my own and i'd rather not be in (more) debt. i'm thinking about going back to grad school, but i'm not sure if my grades are good enough to get into the sort of program i'd like. i'm trying to write a novel. i haven't found that "writer's schedule" yet.

My Interests

procrastination, obfuscation, rumination, bicycles

I'd like to meet:

Those with the capacity for abstract thought.

Music:

equally divided by classy stuff and crap. sometimes i like classy crap.

Movies:

last ten movies i saw in the theater: Atonement, Michael Clayton, There Will Be Blood, Cloverfield, Charlie Wilson's War, Juno, No Country for Old Men, The Mist, The Golden Compass, Southland Tales

Television:

no TV for now. support the WGA!

Books:

Currently reading: World War Z (Max Brooks), The Omnivore's Dilemma (Michael Pollan)

My "top ten" books of "all time":
1. Midnight's Children (Salman Rushdie)
2. House of Leaves (Mark Z. Danielewski)
3. Snow Crash (Neal Stephenson)
4. White Teeth (Zadie Smith)
5. Perdido Street Station (China Mieville)
6. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Michael Chabon)
7. On the Road (Jack Keroauc)
8. The Sparrow/Children of God (Mary Doria Russell)
9. My Antonia (Willa Cather)
10. The Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien)

This list is really arbitrary, and as you can tell, heavily pitched towards genre fiction, which is what i tend to read the most of. I've only read 12 of the Modern Library's Top 100 books of the 20th century. I intend to change that.

Heroes:

my cattle-rustling bandit ancestors.

Goodbye, Katie the Cat...

We had my cat euthanized yesterday. Katie was born in 1993, and she lived nearly 15 years. For most of that 15 years, she was an unusually spry and energetic cat. As many people remember, she was a...

Top Ten Albums of 2007

Hey everyone. The Grammys took place last Sunday. Now, I consider the Grammys to be the weakest of the big four awards shows, but, to be fair, that's largely due to the particular medium they're des...

Best Picture Nominee Review Round-up

It's quite likely that this is the strongest year for film we've had since 1999. It's also the first year since 2001 where I've managed to see all 5 of the Best Picture nominees before the awards cer...
