About Me

The Scourge of the Sea write sweet golden pop music. Swiftly tilting songs surround ghosted melodies and jangled hooks...with the cover and comfort of darkness from the first time you saw the ocean, the first time you got lost and the first time you lost. Smart and literate songwriting coupled with dreamy, atmospheric arrangements don’t displace simple sing-a-longs over fractious electric guitars.
The Scourge of the Sea has recently shared bills with Stars, Fruit Bats, Paleo, Langhorne Slim, Marbles, Rogue Wave and Clem Snide, touring relentlessly throughout the U.S. in support of MAKE ME ARMORED.
The band’s releases include a vinyl demonstration single, "My Sweet One b/w Out of the Trash," out on Paper Records, and a full-length album, Make Me Armored, produced by DUANE LUNDY, available from independent mainstay Alias Records.

THE WRITING ON THE WALL
"Make Me Armored is coherent and polished - full of well-crafted, ethereal tunes that say a lot with few, impeccably chosen words." - PASTE MAGAZINE (band of the week)
." Most songs are jangly, deceptively catchy and go down very easily. Sometimes it’s enough to write finely crafted songs and play them well, and that’s exactly what the Scourge of the Sea does." - THE WASHINGTON POST
"The instrumentation on this album sounds so well put-together and the arrangements just make so much sense that its hard to believe these songs havent existed for thousands of years." 4 out of 5 stars - HARMONIUM MUSIC
"In a world where any two talent-less kids can yell into a microphone and get a record deal, it’s so refreshing to hear a band featuring singers that can actually sing. On the majority of the tracks on this disc, the Scourge of the Sea offer pretty two-, three- and even four-part harmonies. Combining those harmonies with interesting lyrics, driving rhythms, and guitar layers that extend beyond the basic." - PUNK PLANET
"It’s touching and beautiful, recalling The Softies at their best." (of "Waterwings") -YOU AIN’T NO PICASSO July ’06

AND ALL ALIVE.............
"In the studio, this Lexington , Kentucky sextet make smart, melodious rock in the manner of the Fruit Bats or Rogue Wave (both previous touring partners). The emphasis is as much on texture as it is song-craft, and their heralded ’06 debut, Make Me Armored , provides copious proof thereof. But the Jekyll & Hyde live vibe can be far more shambolic and gloriously unbuttoned, sorta like a mash-up of fellow Kentuckians’ Will Oldham and My Morning Jacket after way too many cocktails".
-CREATIVE LOAFING / CHARLOTTE, NC
"Who knew you could commandeer a ship using only a plaintive lovesong. Witness the power of indie rock when The Scourge hits Iota this weekend. Get there early, or expect to watch from the windows outside"
- THE D.C.IST / WASHINGTON D.C.
*"I THINK WE OUGHT TO FLOCK TOGETHER".*
