Formerly The Jackalopes... Wulfkult is Aesthetic Terror Musick. Wulfkult is force. Wulfkult is strength. Wulfkult is vision. Wulfkult is beyond Race, beyond Religion, beyond Fear... We are the hand of the apokalypse. We are Wulfkult. You are Wulfkult.Things are changing. The planet's constantly evolving and shifting. Living things continue to age and die and in various ways give new birth.
Wulfkult started out as the slightly more experimental continuation of horror punk band The Jackalopes. Initially the project was meant to replace The Jackalopes, keeping it's core members in place and bringing in a few new collaborators. With the on again, off again status of The Jackalopes, Wulfkult morphed into a solo project for myself with few collaborations. I created music that I needed to create but I omitted or censored any element that may have had ties to the original Jackalopes sound leaving the project sitting somewhere in a grey area between the worlds of noise, industrial, neo folk, ambient and just plain weird. I am a seeker of new and interesting sounds, visions and ideas. I long for constant forward motion and love all forms of music when performed by their masters as well as those naive forms of sound performed by outsiders experimenting with new and old technologies to create auditory stimulus from the psychedelic and strange to the simple and sublime.
I've had a bit of a fracture I think because of my broad taste. Sensory overload I guess. Where I used to float only one musical boat out to sea at a time, I currently find myself with dozens of projects, some fully functioning and some half built, broken and dragging their malfunctioning bodies through the back of my brain, my hard drive, my notebooks and the Internet. If my musical projects are like a multiple personality disorder then it's time for me to start dealing with each one and realizing it's purpose and place and use and putting all back into one piece. I'll start this by doing what I set out to do a few years ago.
I've tried and tried to keep The Jackalopes boat afloat for a handful of fans, friends, family and even at times for myself. Many of you grew up with the name and many of you are hearing about us just this year. We've broken up and reformed half a dozen times and replaced members just as many times. We are currently in the midst of one of those reformations right now. We have a handful of shows booked throughout December and we're playing and writing better than we have in years. There are currently two original members of the band (myself and drummer Kyle Thirteen) and two new members (Justin Umber and Chuck U. Farley of Systematic Shock). The band is writing at an amazing pace and the old stuff has a new shot in the ass to make it get up and jump one more time but I feel like we're still beating a dead horse. As of January 1st, 2007, The current Jackalopes lineup will become Wulfkult and Wulfkult will move forward as it was always meant to, an amalgamation of The Jackalopes tradition with a more experimental vision.
The new Wulfkult will basically be a beefed up version of The Jackalopes. Many of The Jackalopes songs will remain part of the Wulfkult repertoire and we will continue to write within that frame of reference but with all boundaries and barriers broken. Elements of what you hear and have heard from Wulfkult will remain as part of the Wulfkult sound. ALL of our influences will finally be able to converge properly under one banner. For instance Wulfkult's "Death Valley Dirge" would be a perfect compliment to The Jackalopes' "Cielo '69". The two tracks would sound amazing beside each other. "Destroyer 666" could walk happily, hand in hand with "Holy War '69". Electronic elements will merge with acoustic and folk elements and the bonding element will be the death rock, punk rock n' roll of The Jackalopes. This is a step away from current micro-genre system and a step back toward a broader approach to music. Imagine if early Alice Cooper recorded The Beatles' "White Album" with members of Joy Division, TSOL and The Misfits. Welcome to Wulfkult.
Be sure to welcome Wulfkult and bid farewell to The Jackalopes Dec. 16th, 22nd and 29th (my Birthday! JayJay will be in from California!).
Also, be prepared for a ton of Jackalopes stuff surfacing in '07. The long awaited Jackalopes retrospective, rarities and covers CD's will be out as well as a few comp tracks. Also an area of The Jackalopes site is being converted into a mega-freebie zone! We're going to be giving away a TON of Jackalopes songs and previous albums, EP's and singles. There is also a Jackalopes book in the works that will be an impressive look back at the band's blood and beer soaked past. The book will contain tons of photos and artwork as well as a huge amount of newspaper and magazine press clippings and hopefully current interviews with the band's former members and close friends.
I will continue to keep The Jackalopes name a functioning entity and will do everything I can to keep our legacy of brutality alive and kicking. The new music will be from Wulfkult but The Jackalopes is our history and our heritage. Never forget, Stay Gold.
