Sayer McShane - "The Biggest Little Band!"â„¢
Sayer McShane is an exciting band from Detroit, MI that recently relocated to the Raleigh-Durham, NC area. The group is comprised of Kristin Sayer and Carolyn McShane. Their shows are a fantastic blend of seasoned showmanship and pure, genuine musicianship. They capture a danceable, rockin', funky, Motown feel that is richly steeped in the blues.
Kristin Sayer "The Git-tar Player" is the group's lead singer and lead guitarist. She is also the co-songwriter, producer and arranger and has been performing publicly since the age of thirteen. Vocally she delivers the sultry, soulful feel of Bonnie Raitt with the passion and grit of Janis Joplin. Musically, she's a self-taught multi-instrumentalist whose guitar playing style crystalizes the band's signature sound with a funky, behind-the-beat approach, always bluesy and grooving. She plays lead and rhythm guitars, bass, tenor sax, clarinet, keyboards and sings harmony on their recordings. She also plays drums and has been known to switch instruments with Carolyn in the middle of a show. Kristin was signed to Warner Brothers Records and has since gone on to team up with Carolyn McShane and release material independently. She got her nickname for obvious reasons and since player rhymes with Sayer it helps clarify pronunciation for newcomers.
Carolyn McShane "MC Shane" is the group's funky drummer and keyboardist. She is also the co-songwriter, recording engineer and backing vocalist who's been performing publicly since her teens as well. Her drums are a perfect compliment to Kristin's guitar whether it's blues, rock, funk, country or disco for that matter. Her drumming approach is equal parts slinky sophistication and heavy, pocket backbeat. She plays drums, guitar, keyboards and percussion on their recordings. Her harmonies really cap off what sets this group apart whether it's a lush ballad, bluesy rock or a slamming soul classic. Notably, she graduated with honors from The Recording Workshop, an audio engineering school in Chillicothe, OH. As a result, Carolyn runs live sound and records the duo on the Pro Tools TDM platform, the industry standard in music today. She got her nickname in Selma, NC when one of the workers at Sweetwater's saw the marquee and thought she was a dj. He later found out she was simply Irish.
Sayer McShane is a fun and talented group that not only play and sing well but they invariably pull every audience into their show with humor, personable nature and surprising intensity. They are definitely a musical powerhouse worth checking out so prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Catch a show or pick up their CD and you'll understand what everyone's talking about because Sayer McShane truly is, "The biggest little band!" â„¢. Influences: Motown, funk, soul, blues, classic rock

About “The Girls”:

Sayer McShane loves to play blues, funk, soul and rock for people who really love listening to music and supporting original artists. Kristin and Carolyn love to show people that women can really sing and play core intruments like guitar and drums, not just be the "chick singer". Hey, if you have pipes like Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan or Celine Dion more power to you. But what about if you want to see someone playing an instrument? What about a lead instrument? Sassy! They play a lot of instruments as you can see by their photo gallery. They also love to entertain the crowd with their interactive dialogue in between songs. So it's settled. You really must come see a show!

I'd Like to Meet:

Kristin: Basia Trzetrzelewska, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, Shania Twain, Oprah, Gretchen Wilson, Bill Clinton, Jodie Foster and not necessarily in that order.

Carolyn: Ann and Nancy Wilson, Kevin Eubanks and the drummer, visit John "Mutt" Lange and his studio. Both would like to meet Dolly Parton and the cast of All My Children.

Interests:

Kristin: Inspiring people, writing music, playing guitar, sharing great music with great people, making people laugh and feel comfortable, watching Pro Football, back porch sittin', watching thunderstorms roll in, walking, badminton, cats, scenic photography, framing and matting the results, treasure hunting - sifting for gems or with a metal detector. Long walks off a short pier, I mean long walks on the beach. Just seeing if you were paying attention. Actually neither because I don't go out in the sun if I can help it. There's always a moonlight drive, though. Take me on a slow ride.

Carolyn: Studio recording techniques, cracking jokes, swimming, walking my dog, watching the stars come out, fireside sittin', treasure hunting - sifting for gems or with a metal detector. Threatening to fling drumsticks at selected hecklers, mostly our friends. Twirling my sticks while contemplating 4-limb separation while singing while adjusting the sound with my other drumstick while smiling while acknowledging the 9 millionth person yell out Freebird.

Music:

Kristin: 60's soul, blues featuring guitar, Hendrix, Prince, AC/DC, Alan Jackson, Stevie Wonder/Motown, Shania, The Doors, Bonnie Raitt, James Brown & The JB's, Funk Brothers, Basia, Earth, Wind and Fire, Take 6.

Carolyn: Playing funk, classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Heart, listening to 60's R & B. Both love the musicianship in country music.

Movies:

Both love Shawshank Redemption, Erin Brockovich, Scent Of A Woman, Star Trek (The Next Generation is our favorite but we love the general concept), action movies (Vin Diesel, Denzel Washington), anything with Hillary Swank, Ashley Judd, the Rock, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine or Al Pacino.

Kristin: After much consideration I decided that almost everything I need to know about life I learned from the movie Pretty Woman. There's a scene, character and line for just about every scenario I've been through that is paralleled in that movie. Who knew it was such a profound masterpiece?

Carolyn: It is only with close friends, preferably in the late hours of the evening that it's appropriate to chill out with a nice, cold drink of Tranya.

Television:

Both watch Pro Football, CNN, Animal Planet, Bill Maher, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, American Idol and All My Children (last two are shameless amusement).

Something you didn't know about us:

Kristin:

I'm an avid Hot Wheels collector, preferably Redlines.

Carolyn:

I like to drink coffee, play my piano and chill.

Favorite color:

Heroes:

All the people that work tirelessly to defend and protect animals, children and our country. Anyone who believes in giving more than they take and PEOPLE WHO DON'T MISTAKE KINDNESS FOR WEAKNESS.

Books:

Kristin: The Power Of Intention - Dr. Wayne Dyer.

Carolyn: Home recording literature in general.

Roots:

Kristin: Finnish

"Jos et löydä rauhaa itsestämme on turhaa etsiä sitä muualta."
~If you can not find peace within yourself, it is useless to look elsewhere.~

Carolyn: Irish

"Síochán leat."
~Peace be with you.~
