“LowLife is the name that society gave us”. This is the credo of the Toronto based rap collective. The phrase speaks volumes of what the group is all about. Priding themselves on having a name which is more an ironic statement than an accurate depiction, they have chosen to embrace a label they feel has been undeservingly placed on rappers and the youth of Hip-Hop culture in general. Rather than combat the pre-conceived notions that accompany their lifestyle, they choose instead to wear the image of lowlife as a proverbial shield; blocking out those who would only judge or misjudge them and inviting in the open minded, allowing the music to speak on its own behalf.
Comprised primarily of four young men, born and raised in Toronto and the surrounding area, LowLife is a prime example of what Canada’s Mega City has to offer the international urban music landscape. Meyend Tricks (pronounced Mind Tricks), Omega, Hustle and Detales (pronounced Details) each offer unique styles and perspectives in their music which carefully balances their creativity, ingenuity, energy, honesty and marketability. Each of these core members provides listeners with his own views in his own way. However, there is an underlying like-mindedness between them which allows a seamless chemistry. LowLife is equal parts arrogance and humility, love and lust, conscious and commercial. In reality, most of us experience a full range of emotions and subscribe to a litany of differing opinions throughout our day to day lives. It is their unapologetic representation of this kaleidoscope of seemingly contradictory standpoints that speaks to their honesty. And it is their innate ability to present these perspectives in a refreshingly genuine and consistently entertaining way that defines exactly what LowLife is.
Begun with the new millennium, LowLife was originally a rap group made up of the same four members which remain its core and several others. They cut their teeth in rap as most in their profession do, during their high school years, writing lyrics when they were supposed to be doing schoolwork, battling other aspiring emcees in the lunchroom and rocking microphones at house parties. During these formative years they developed their distinct styles and discovered the strength of their own abilities and each others’, forming a mutual respect between them. As the artists became increasingly dedicated to their crafts and started approaching the music as a serious profession, a true movement started to take shape. Meyend Tricks dubbed the crew LowLife, Hustle made the transition from rapper/singer to full time singer and things began to take off. As the LowLife movement gained steam, new artists joined the fold and others left but the core of four remained intact. Having now performed throughout North America, leaving a trail of rave reviews behind them, LowLife currently enjoys a loyal and ever-growing following.
The crew is currently hard at work promoting their first release. Toronto Star is a mix CD showcasing solo tracks from LowLife front man Meyend Tricks but also contains appearances from other LowLife members and artists from around the globe. It is a promotional release which will be given away for free at shows and other events but will also be available online for free download at their myspace page (myspace.com/lowlife2006).
