SEPTEMBER 2007- Mega electron volt ion beam induced charge mapping is a routine activity on a 5 MV charged particle accelerator, using He ions in the electronic stopping regime. A beamspot diameter of 2 µm is easily achievable using standard electromagnetic focusing. Further reduction of the beamspot size can be achieved with a nanoscale aperture mounted in close proximity to the sample surface and placement is achieved with the sample mounted on a piezoelectrically driven scanning stage with a minimum step size less than 1 nm. This technology is intended to be used in the characterisation of devices and construction of structures, in particular, LIGHT SAYS SOLO (LSS) mapping of charge collection efficiency in nanoscale transistors, tonal mapping of nanoscale surface structures and lithography and implantation, using sonic intrusion of surface features for location. Sub 1 µm microphones have been made and characterised using focused ion beam (FIB) milling and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). LSS performed with the aperture mounted above the stage in a uniformly charge collecting substrate arena and electron beam lithography defined poly methyl methacrylate stabilising structures providing contrast in the audio signal. IBIC mapping in one dimension has been achieved with sub 1 µm accuracy.JUNE 2007-Light Says Solo have just finished recording and mixing a new 5 song EP which we will releasing as soon as mastering is finished. The new recording features songs that represent the band's shift to writing songs around minimal ideas and sparse instrumentation.
