My name is Eragon. I am Garrow’s nephew, Roran’s cousin, and the chosen Rider of the dragon Saphira. My mother was Selena. I never knew her, for she left me with her brother and his wife to raise as their own.
I lived in Palancar Valley, by the village of Carvahall, until I discovered Saphira’s egg and she hatched for me. Now I roam the land of Alagaësia, fleeing King Galbatorix and doing what I can to destroy Galbatorix and his Empire. Even if it takes a thousand years, I shall not rest until I know my family and the people of Alagaësia are safe from his dark rule.
Family is one of the most important things to me. However, my aunt, Marian, died years ago, and the foul Ra’zac killed Garrow while they were searching for Saphira. All I have left is Roran, and we have been separated for some time now.
Saphira is closer to me than anyone else in the world. I would die to protect her, and I know she would do the same for me. We can touch each other’s minds and often do. Even in the dark of night, I am never alone. I think Saphira is the most beautiful creature I have ever seen: her scales are blue, and they sparkle like gemstones; she is as lithe as a cat, fierce as a falcon, and regal as a queen. Every time I look at her, I’m grateful and amazed that she chose me as her Rider.
Some of my friends include the storyteller Brom; the elf, Arya; Angela the herbalist; Orik, and Murtagh, a young man I met during my travels.
Who am I, then? I’m not sure. I have lost a great many things—Garrow, my home—and yet I have also gained a great deal. I have seen amazing sights, met with remarkable people, survived terrible fights, above all, been lucky enough to be with Saphira. I don’t know if it’s possible for us to overthrow Galbatorix, but whatever fate has in store for us, I am content with what I’ve done and experienced, and I hunger to strike back against the Empire.
