About Me
So my new album is "Rare Creatures" and it is now available on www.cdbaby.com/carolyndowd. . . to give you a sense of my stuff: A moody fusion of roots, rock, alt, country and pop. I like to think my music is a quirky melodic musical graffiti that brings out themes from many bizarre, beautiful and unmentionable places . . . I grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee and learned three-part harmony singing rounds with mom and dad, both classical pianists and music teachers. In her early 20s, she sang and played keys in covers bands, and later with a jazz quartet. For awhile she played solo keyboard jazz and sang pop standards in local hotels and restaurants, and then, tired of small town life, moved to Nashville, a slightly larger small town. There she worked as a reporter and sang at night with another covers band. Eventually she burned out on singing other people’s stuff, and began to write songs of some musical merit . . . later appearing at open mics, local venues, and outdoor fairs. To further a family tradition of eschewing financial reward for noble arty poverty, she earned a master’s degree in English lit down the road in Murfreesboro. In 1994, Carolyn moved to San Francisco and met some amazing songwriters and musicians hiding in places like the Hotel Utah, Bazaar Café, Blue Bear School, Freight and Salvage, under rocks, 111 Minna, and other furtive little joints. . . . In 2001 she put out a four-song demo cd, in 2002 sang back-up with John Baker and Lotus Rush on their first two albums, released a single on the album "Fortune Cookes 2" for Fortune Records, and in 2007 she released her full-length cd, “Rare Creatures.†Over the past five years she has played at Hotel Utah, Slim's (part of last year's Fortune Records cd release), Red Devil Lounge, Ireland's 32, and other cafes and venues in SF, Berkeley and Oakland.
She has worked with Bill Spooner (mastermind and founder of “The Tubesâ€) and Bonnie Hayes (hit songwriter for Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler and Cher), and other people too lovely and multiple to mention. . . .
