Troy Sawyer is a rising Trumpeter from the banquettes of New Orleans, La. His career spans fifteen years. As a child, Troy first played the violin for four years, but it was in the fourth grade that Troy discovered the trumpet; and as a result of his discipline, dedication, and hours of practicing, Troy Sawyer is known as an accomplished trumpet player. Troy Sawyer is also an illustrious composer, arranger, and producer. His love for music is a genetic trait that flows through this musicians’ blood. His great grandfather, Louis D. James Sr., was not only a double bass player for Louis Armstrong, but he is one of the many legendary musicians to have memorabilia in The Jazz Museum in New Orleans. Troy Sawyer attended St. Augustine High School where he played the trumpet in the marching, jazz, and concert band. During his high school years, he had the chance to study with Klyde Kerr Jr., Edward “Kidd” Jordan, Victor Goins, Gregory Dawson, Ray Johnson, Donald Harrison, Cecil Taylor, and Alvin Batiste. Subsequently, He decided to attend Xavier University as a performance major in which he studied classical trumpet under the tutelage of Ron Banko, who is the lead trumpet player in the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra. Thereafter, he transferred to Southern University in New Orleans where his major was music education; at Southern University he had studied Jazz and Classical trumpet with August Floury. Mr. Sawyer has played many venues within the New Orleans area such as King Bolden’s, Tipitinas, Blue Nile, Shiloh, Hookah Café, Zulu Club and Harrah’s Casino in which he had the honor opening a show for Lahla Hathaway and Wynton Marsalis. He also played in various places in Spain: Pamplona, Santiago, DeCopostella, Madrid, Barcelona, Oviedo, and Talladega. New York and Atlanta are a couple of places within the United States outside of New Orleans that Troy has left his presence: New York: St Nick’s in Harlem and Taj Lounge in Manhattan. Atlanta: Hammond House at Moore house College. He describes his music as soulful, innovative, and diverse. As a member of the audience you would either want to get up and dance or sit at a table tapping your feet, snapping your fingers or bobbing your head to the chromatic energy and engaging sound that first comes from the musicians inhaling breathe then exhaling the electrifying sounds within the trumpet which oozes an exhilarating sound.
