Skylab Studio opened it's doors in 2001. Since then, countless artists have achieved their recording goals on independent budgets here. Many artists I have worked with have recieved national airplay and signed to both Major and Independent labels. Prior to 2001, I worked professionally in studios for Music as well as Film and Television. Skylab Studio offers great rates and experience. Recording At Skylab Studio:

Thanks for visiting the studio. At the core of Skylab Studio is a late 70s Analog mixing board built to weather the most demanding studio applications. Within it's near 300 lb. exterior are vintage class "A" mic preamps which allow for the most transparent studio recordings. But this is only the beginning... ALL channels in the studio bypass the stock Pro-Tools preamps and run through both Tube Preamps as well as the Vintage Preamps from the mixing board. Hand selected Condenser Microphones and Dynamic mics are then placed to capture an exceptional drum sound. I balance out the live room with a genuine twin tube condenser microphone and two over-head condensers microphones to capture an exceptionally accurate drum sound.

While you record, your amps are located in the room adjacent to the main room so there is no bleed from other instruments on the drum kit. The Live Room has been professionally insulated so there is no hum, hiss, ambience or other unwanted noise being recorded. Additionally, the studio has been wired using only the highest quality Mogami brand cables throughout which allows for the purest and most transparent audio recording. A house kit drum set is available at no extra charge but you will need to bring your own cymbals and a snare drum if you decide to use it. The house kit is a high quality Premier brand kit made in England.

Once your band is settled in, we will set the headphone levels and begin tracking. If you record to a metranome then one will be provided during basic tracking.

When it comes to vocal cues, the studio features a vocal booth that can accomodate any player who provides the vocals for the band. The booth allows for another level of isolation which eliminates the vocals from bleeding into the drum mics.

When basic tracking is complete, we then move on to begin over-dubbing any additional guitars, keyboards, strings or whatever you need. Typically, the last stage is recording the vocals.

When it comes to vocal recording, your singer(s) will use a large diaphram condenser microphone similar to a Neumann U87. My vocal mic of choice is an original production line Rode NT2 made in Australia. These mics are incredible for capturing vocals. Vocals are also run through professional tube preamps and tube compressors tailored to suit your distinctive sound. I have worked with all levels of singers from the most advanced to those recording their voice for the 1st time. I go out of my way to make sure that all vocalists are comfortable and work at the pace that is appropriate to each singer.

After all tracks have been recorded we move on to mixing and editing. I have a wide variety of plug-ins for every kind of effect. From Reverbs and Delays to Chorus and amp effects, I can can create any sound that you would like to make. If you choose to master your CD here in the studio, I will do so free of charge during your scheduled time. If you choose to Master your CD somewhere else, I will prepare all your files accordingly.
