What is Wispa?
Wispa is the real voice of the community. We are medium that inspires, educate and unite all young black youths and allow them to voice their opinions on society. Wispa comes in the form of a highly sophisticated and thought out design in a A5 full colour magazine that is published on a quarterly basis.
We at Wispa believe many young people from ethnic minorities especially black males have no real black role models, or people that they can look up to for inspiration. There are a lot of prominent black role models out there that are truly inspirational, but either we are never told of them or they are never put in the public eye. No one to look up to, no one to go to for advice, leaving them low in sprit and self esteem causing many to be rebellious against society, or become innocent victims to gangs. Gangs that offer them a feeling of acceptance, older members to replace that father figure so that young person turn to them for advice and guidance, so that they begin to subconsciously idolise them. This negative role model structures their outlook on life, and leads them further and further away for society, until they are almost completely segregated. This street custom steers a lot of children towards crime, they having a hunger for the fast money which is portrayed by the people they see as their role models which also included rap artists such as Fifty Cents who glorifies and promotes gun culture, and utterly disregards his influences on the younger generations.
Aims
The aim's of Wispa is to show the youths more positive role models that have contributed to society, which may inspirer them to accomplish their goals. Showing them that any thing they put their mind to can achieve, boosting their self-confidence, making them know "If I can do it, so can you". The €˜Gun and Drug€™ culture of today has become a bigger part of are society. I believe if I can divert youth away from these weapons of destruction, it can be achieved through Wispa. Wispa has the potential to do this, through the articles, people and stories it contains, if the children see it at an early enough age, and realize the potential they possess.
