I have two kinds of interests; ones that are profoundly erudite, and ones that are profoundly geeky--There is no middle ground. Intellectual interests include Modern western philosophy, ancient and medieval history, and film, modern art, classic lit, and classical music and dance.
I love trivia that tests real knowledge.
On the other side of the corpus callosum, my geeky self emerges; I love sci-fi, comic books, and cartoons.
Despite my addiction to these things, I've always maintained a sense of humor about them, and can laugh at my own geekinees and intellectual snobbery, and can put them away if need really be.
i like clubs, but i don't dance. its as a courtesy to everyone else.
I only like three sports; Mixed martial arts, boxing, and the world's strongest man/woman contests. yes, its a sport, if you've never seen the world's strongest man on espn2, seriously, you do not know what you are missing. I actually have a crush on strongwoman Heini Koivuniemi. http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/ramfil

that should open a video of her kicking the shit out of larger, uglier women.
People who knew you in high school would probably describe you as a weirdo. People probably still describe you as a weirdo.
Name the movie my headline quote is from, and i'll buy you a plate of shrimp. if you know the movie you'll get the joke.
I knew something was strange about my musical tastes when, as a little kid, i went nuts over bands like duran duran and tears for fears. plain old pop music was really good in the 80's.
that set me on a musical trajectory.
i leave my mp3 player on random. hitting skip ten times, out of 1200 mp3s, this is what played : 1. a clip of dr evil in therapy, 2. funkervogt, f-117, 3. covenant, theremin, 4. VAC, fun with drugs, 5. the go go's, head over heels, 6. beatles, hey jude, 7. leaether strip, testure, 8. inxs, elegantly wasted, 9. duran duran, new moon on monday, 10. vnv nation, epicenter.
i've seen worse snapshots of taste.
Top ten movies of all time? (i'm sure i should have edited this by now, but i'll bet its still a pretty good list) 10. One flew over the cuckoo's nest, 9. The french connection, 8. the good, the bad, and they ugly, 7. Hiroshima mon amor, 6. the seven samurai, 5. the godfather, part II, 4. Taxi Driver, 3. Apocalypse Now, 2. the Manchurian candidate, 1. Cool hand luke.
By no means a perfect list, but i stand by my choices.
Honorable mention, fight club, amelie, the usual suspects, memento, some like it hot, the unforgiven, what about bob..the list goes on. i love both old and new films, love seeing indie films, and for some reason, have a soft spot for those gritty, slow, grand 60's spagetti westerns.
top ten sci fi?
10. Enemy mine, 9. Dune (lynch version), 8. gattica 7. repo man, 6. Dark city, 5 Delicatessen, 4. the terminator (the original), 3. 12 monkeys 2. Blade runner, 1. Tron .
Honorable mention, the incredibles, donnie darko, superman (chris reeves), altered states, army of darkness. disney's lilo and stich was actually good sci fi.
not sure where to put "the adventures of buckaroo banzi accross the 8th dimension", but it belongs here too.
Futurama, star trek (tos and ds9, mainly), farscape, simpsons, family guy, Invader zim, the tick, freakazoid, animaniacs, south park, pinky and the brain, bullwinkle, aqua teen hunger force, squidbillies, venture brothers, home movies...i think you get the idea here. i'm also a big sketch comedy fan, but i am picky; kids in the hall and monty python, however, can do no wrong.
i can watch drama too; deadwood, carnivale, rome, and six feet under have all been excellent shows.
Today's top ten 10. the satanic verses, rushdie, 9. of mice and men, steinbeck, 8. Foucault's pendudlum, eco, 7. the name of the rose, eco, 6. of human bondage, Maugham, 5. letters from the earth, twain, 4. no exit, sartre, 3, the gay science, nietzsche, 2. Candide, voltaire, 1. one flew over the cuckoo's nest, keesey Honorable mention...jesus, too many to bother listing.
Maurice LaMarche, voice of : the brain, from futurama, he did calculon, kif kroker, morbo the news monster, lur from omicron persei 8, and many more, on freakazoid, he was the voice of longhorn, and was the "voice" of dizzy devil on tiny toons, and did tons of bit characters for the duckman cartoon and the simpsons, and also for warner bros newer crop of cartoons, including the voice of sqibb the pigeon from the animanic's "goodfeathers". he also did the voice of destro on g.i. joe, and has done tons of voice work for tv, including the voice of dr. strange for the live action hulk tv show. he even appeared, in the flesh, on an episode of "the facts of life"--finally, lamarche is holywood's default orson wells impersonator.
if i calculated all of the time in the last fifteen years i have spent laughing or happy, i'd wager that 50% of the time, maurice lamarche's voice was there in some form, even if it was just in my head.
thank you, maurice.
as of late, the monarch, from the venture brothers, has become a hero of mine.
