being in the out of doors. scrabble, people...i lurve it. i love to snowshoe. tennis, hiking, snowboarding, playing in the desert, playing in the woods. good friends, good books, good movies. i enjoy the environment and want to learn more about it, in all it's complicated beauty. i'm always interested in a glass of ice cold orange juice, extra pulp if possible. i'll admit without shame, well maybe a little shame, that i like to knit. yes i do. and also i may or may not be obsessed with "this american life" on NPR. i like coffee and teas and like to watch people from coffee shop windows. i like to receive and send mail via post. i love a hand-written letter. love my favorite mug...it's my favorite. and i love to hang out with my sister. we have similar senses of humor so obviously find each other HI-larious
freddie mercury (insert incredible picture of him in mini skirt, or performing in a silvery lamee jumpsuit here). aaaaaaand a highly trained international spy who will teach me spy skills like super human attention to detail and fool-proof lie detection skills. tina fey. can't we be friends already? and this one amazing woman who was interviewed on "this american life" who has the greatest, ever changing list of goals i've ever heard of.
i like several varieties of sad bastard music: ryan adams, fiona apple, chris isaak, mason jennings, nick drake, modest mouse, rachel yamagata, bic runga, cat power... as well as antonio carlos jobim, shakira (don't judge me), hedwig and the angry inch (shout of thanks to you, char!). elvis, alicia keys' unplugged album kicks my ass, erykah badu, michael franti, prince, iron & wine, tori amos, the "rushmore" soundtrack, i just recently fell in love with the "life aquatic with Steve Zissou" soundtrack....it is excellent. there are times when it's so good, it makes one a little bit weepy, or maybe it's just the sad bastard in me...the rollings stones, aretha franklin, otis redding, al green, marvin gaye, the motown sound really, miles davis, charles mingus, kenny rogers and dolly parton singing "islands in the stream" (if i am ever allowed to kareoke again, i'll sing this one. i'll sing both parts. i don't care. it's so good.) johnny cash, most anything, really.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen...it's glorious. watch it now. let's have a moment for pale rider...i love you, Preacher. amelie. pride and prejudice (BBC version, in all of its 6hr, slow-moving, british-period-piecey-PBS excellence). Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tennenbaums, of course. I love musicals…for so many reasons, not least of which is the dancing that accompanies the singing, and that the characters don’t question the absurdity of breaking into song and cheorographed dance steps: singing in the rain, take me out to the ball game, west side story, viva las vegas, blue hawaii (stop judging me), the sound of music, the man of la mancha (I even own the record), the wizard of oz…i'm a sucker for old movies sans song and dance, too: the Philadelphia story, mr. lucky, his girl Friday, north by northwest, cat on a hot tin roof, you get the idea... back to movies made in the last 25 years: state of mind...excellent...seriously, watch it now. and city of god. also watch this one now. the princess bride. lucia, lucia. best in show. BABE (don’t care. it’s fabulous. who knew i could love a pig so much). RAD, thank you thank you thank you charlene for being the most awesome movie critic ever and introducing us all to this gem. i will never be able to experience "bring me an angel" without instantly thinking about the BMX bikes duel/mating dance and disco balls...love it. The muppets take manhattan. cloak and dagger. newsies. clue. beauty and the beast. bedknobs and broomsticks. zoolander. the jerk. dead men don't wear plaid. terms of endearment (it was the first movie that made me boo-hoo cry). hedwig and the angry inch (thanks be to you, once again, char). the labrynth (altho i can't believe it's billed as a children's movie. it's terrifying really, but strangely alluring and hypnotic…the songs, the themes, the david bowie. all about my mother. bad education. donnie darko. napolean dynamite. i just saw syriana. i thought it was excellent. i just saw turtles can fly...haunting and heart breaking...this list is too long. want to remove some of them but they are all so good...i guess i'll just burn a few retinae, or at least those retinae of the few who actually read this far. oh and also, i saw nanny mcphee. it was good. there's this dancing donkey that really makes me smile.
old lady mystery shows...perry mason, the rockford files, columbo, murder she wrote
