Mystic Moon Prints is an online (and offline. . .if you live in the Bay Area) e-commerce print business founded on the island of Maui in May of 2004. But that sounds so official, right? Ulysses and Danielle met in San Diego, and after an amazing trip to the Central American country of Belize, decided to move to Hawaii.
Yes, it was that simple. . .not really but it sounds good. Moving to an island in the middle of the Pacific is a challenging thing to do, but once you set your mind to something, it all comes down to that famous Nike slogan: Just Do It.
On Maui there is the town of Lahaina (say Lahh-Hi-nah) and in the middle of town is a ginormous Banyan tree that takes up an entire block. Every weekend there is an art show where the couple met a woman who sold jewlery. She explained that since Maui is filled with tourists one could live off the profits from a small business.
And so Mystic Moon Prints was born!
Well, that is the short version.
Danielle is a photographer and shoots on film and loves the medium of black and white photography. It was very bold to offer black and white photos in such a tropical, colorful environment (come on, men where LOUD colorful clothing and it is the norm!)but she did, and they sold as well, if not better than her color pictures. Ulysses loves to create Fantasy art, it was also bold to offer fairies and unicorns in a market DOMINATED by sea turtles, palm tress and sunset paintings (although he was influenced by the culture and art and created a line of island art). They quit their jobs and started selling. . .
A year and half go by.
You know, moving to an island sounds good on paper, and looks good even as I type this, but the reality is another story. Perhaps if they were rich and could jet back and forth things would have been different. But on Maui just to fly to Kaui would cost more than a Southwest flight from New York to L.A. And so they caught island fever and with the skills and lessons learned decided to move to San Francisco. Yep: slow as honey sultry Maui, why not flip it and move to the hustle and bustle of America's best City?
Maybe you are beginning to get a sense of these people.
