Marc Marzenit

In his schooldays, at a time when his friends were emulating the medalists of the then ongoing Barcelona Olympic Games, Marc Martinez would instead keep precociously busy with the tricky taming of an Atari 1040ST with a keyboard Casio PT1 connected to large headphones. The attempt did not quite succeed, but the strong-headed 9 year-old little man would all the same spend most of his spare time testing a “playskool” deck. The background music of his teenage remained bands like the Alan Parson Project or Pink Floyd. He advisedly took advantage of a dad working at a disc store.
In 1995, Marc’s parents left his hometown, Barcelona, to settle in Mollerussa and little Marc had to pack and follow. There he studied solfeggio and piano for 7 years at the town school. Creatively restless by nature, he soon grew confident to make his first compositions of classical music. The classically-trained young Marc wouldn’t tour Europe playing Piano as geniuses of the past had done; he instead got his first synthesizer, a Casio HT-6000, and as he turned 15, was given his first personal computer. Marc was now put in command of a full, though made of silicon, philharmonic orchestra and he wouldn’t wait a minute to set off creating his own stuff with programs like Audio Mulch, Cubase and Fruity Loops.
Geniuses can remain forever undiscovered, but most of them achieve the success they deserve, sooner or later, one way or another. For Marc Marzenit (he’s one of them, that’s for sure) this recognition arrived quite soon and in an unexpected way. Even before releasing his first record, he was given the chance to play live in the small room at club Florida135. He recorded the gig and the CD-R, which he called Live at Boîte, had a wide distribuition and deep appreciation among connoisseurs. Once the fire was set, it all happened very fast. In one year, he had played four more times at Florida, started his own label (Paradigma Musik, which Kompakt decided to distribute even before the first release was out), had been chosen 2nd Best Spanish Producer by Go Mag, played twice in Berlin, done a tour of Latin America…
Although the number of his releases is naturally still not very high, Marc has left his imprint is some of the most rellevant new Spanish labels, as Regular, Votox, Miga and Natura Sonoris, and his tracks have had an impact he wouldn’t even dare dream of. DJ Tiësto included Trozitos de Navidad in his new mix-CD tracklist, In Search of Sunrise-Ibiza. Another DJ superstar, John Digweed, chose Spheere for his mix Transitions Vol. 3 (in fact, Marzenit’s track is the first one after the intro). Don’t believe the hype, as they say, but Marzenit is here to stay. In March 2007 he played a few clubs in Costa Rica and Colombia, and in September he toured Canada, Mexico and Colombia again. Meanwhile, Paradigma Musik, the label he manages with three colleagues, has mantained a steady rhythm of releases and has already achieved an important emerging artists roster (Ludovic Vendi, Monomachine, Paul Ritch…). Plus, in spite of his young age, Marc is frequently requested to give musical production master classes.
The beauty of Marc’s productions, with his strong melodic charge and his good taste for harmonies, has seduced everyone (we could add Angel Molina, Dominik Eulberg, Hernán Cattáneo or Umek to the ones already quoted). You could say this is because the artist has done classical music and sound studies, but this probably woludn’t matter at all if he hadn’t a very unique talent.
