That's right. Oktoberfest began in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festival lasted three days, accompanied by mountains of food and a river of Munich beer.
In 1872 the master brewer from Spaten introduced a new style of beer he had derived from a Viennese lager, with a sweeter flavor and a bit more alcohol. The result was groundbreaking and the beer was a hit.
From that day on all the other Munich breweries (and later the rest of the world) had to have an "Oktoberfest beer," but there can be only one original. This is made clear by the ceremonial tapping of the first keg at Oktoberfest by the Lord Mayor of Munich. That's right, the mayor of Munich personally taps the first keg of Spaten beer in the Schottenhamel tent to open the festivities, crowning the deed with the jubilant cry of 'O'zapft is!' ('It's tapped!'). No other beers are served in any tent until this is done.
