THE MISSION:
Invisible Children Inc. is dedicated to educating the children of Uganda, as well as raising awareness on what the U.N. has deemed "the greatest emergency in the world today involving children", providing financial resources to invisible children by documenting their true, untold stories in a creative and relevant way, resulting in positive change.
THE MOVIE:
In the spring of 2003, three young Americans traveled to Africa in search of a story. What they found was a tragedy that both disgusted and inspired them. A story where children are the weapons, and children are the victims. This is what they found: Every night in Uganda, thousands of children leave their homes and walk for miles into town to sleep for fear that they might be abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army. The LRA exists to overthrow the Ugandan government, meanwhile kidnapping, raping, torturing and murdering the population on their way to doing so. And the children they kidnap, they brainwash to help them fight their murderous cause. Those children who do not adapt, they torture and kill. It is this story that inspired the travelers to do something. And so the "Invisible Children" film project was born in an attempt to bring the childrens' story to the attention of the world.
Jacob: the boy who cried
On the first night in Northern Uganda the three filmmakers met Jacob at the bus park. Jacob, a former child soldier, was taken from his home, and robbed of his education. After escaping the bush at 14, he dreamed of returning to school to become a lawyer, but did not have the means to do so. At the end of the Invisible Children: Rough Cut, Jacob says, I have nothing. I dont even have a blanket. We dont have anything to do with food. Maybe we can eat once a day so it is better when you kill us. And, if possible you can kill us, you kill us. For us, we dont want now to stay. no one taking care of us. We are not going to school... Immediately after saying this, the filmmakers cried with him.
At only 16, Jacob provoked Invisible Children Inc's belief in education as a way to freedom. Jacob, the quiet boy with the contagious laugh, has sparked a fire that will eventually give thousands of children the freedom to learn. In 2003 the filmmakers made a promise, as friends, to pay Jacobs way through school. But he is just one boy.The filmmakers thought, If this bond between child and mentor helps make a difference, maybe it can change lives on a larger scale. And so they put it to work.
MOVEMENT:
How it involves you. After people viewed the movie the one question repeatedly asked was, what can we do? And so a non-profit was born from the film. The Movement is the awareness, mobilization, and fundraising effort taking place throughout America and other countries around the world by people who are inspired to act. The goal of "the Movement" is to empower the individual viewer to become a part of the story, and "be the change they wish to see in the world" through action.
