Even Silent Films Had Music

About Me

~ Even silent films had music ~
SCIENCE FRICTION Scoring/Sound Design was born out of the love for combining music with film. Founded by Frank Sonsini and George Martindell, the duo began toiling away making strange, useful instrumental music and design by using electronic and acoustic instruments. The two, both lovers of the macabre and of the extra-terrestrial, realized they both would "vision" possible cinematic scenes while listening to and creating their unusual music.
After a period of experimentation with growing knowledge of their craft, they decided it was time to take these urges and apply them to film. They also realized that they were somewhat "Yin" and "Yang" when it came to producing this format. With firm knowledge of recording and engineering, Sonsini took the helm and began to give this medium edge and atmosphere. Martindell, with influences in different styles of music and prior film projects, directs and promotes the music.
SCIENCE FRICTION'S first task was to create original music for the TNT Network production, "Faces of Evil." This documentary combines a score by the late Bernard Herrmann, interviews with John Carpenter and Marilyn Manson, and narration by Malcolm McDowell. Despite it’s dark subject matter, TNT aired the documentary multiple times following "The Devil’s Advocate," starring Al Pacino. The Hollywood Reporter reviewed it as "compelling imagery with excellent music."
The next collaboration was to provide dark and symphonic arrangements for Vancouver filmmakers, Titan Pictures for a movie based on the H.P. Lovecraft story, "The Terrible Old Man," written by the Leo Award nominated Steve Abbott. The film has thrilled audiences at Indie Film Festivals and sci-fi conventions across North America, and is currently being aired on the Canadian TV channels: Space - The Imagination Station, and BRAVO!
Next, was composing scores for two short films for David Sloma Productions of Toronto, Canada. The first being a quirky comedy, "Me and Pollyanna;" the other a dark and twisted murder short, "Details." The two films are presently being distributed by Big Film Shorts in Hollywood, California.
After meeting renowned Flash animator Robert Feldman, the two composers soon started collaborating with the U. S. based Feldman Productions on his unique animated on-line series, "The Perils of...DR. SHROUD." Two complete episodes, "Alley of the Dolls" and "La Maudite," featuring the music of SCIENCE FRICTION, was released in early 2005. The DVD has distribution through the on-line stores of companies such as Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, and Target, and was produced by the superlative Knight Productions, also based in the United States. "DR. SHROUD" has since caught the attention of a few major animation studios who have shown very strong interest in Robert’s productions. Robert recently completed "The Boy In The Box" three-part series with the music of SCIENCE FRICTION.
Currently, the E! Entertainment Network has used the duo for "Taradise," their celebrity based reality TV show starring, Tara Reid. ‘Spanish flavored’ SCIENCE FRICTION music was applied to an episode of Tara’s travels and adventures in Pamplona, Spain.
