little is known of David Ramsey's childhood, except that he was born in the desert somewhere west of the great dividing range. it is said that the only other infant in the small maternity hospital where he was born was an aboriginal baby, and that this child murmered secrets of the dreamtime while the nurses slept.
his family drifted east to dubbo, where David's tuition in the ways of the murder ballad and grotesque folk tale was commenced by an old catholic nun, a native of ireland. she was well versed in the kind of cautionary tales designed to tempt young men away from sin, yet which somehow have the effect of drawing them closer to it.
he found himself as a young man in the steel city of newcastle, scraping a living from government handouts and playing in bands with names like The Hanged Man, Coffin' Joe and Dogsbody. in the mid 90's david began to believe he was being visited by aliens and saw third eyes everywhere, so for seven long years he languished in a mental institution. here he passed the time by making whistles out of paper cups, and trying to convince all the jesuses that they are one.
a few years back he turned up on the doorstep of producer and songwriter David Virgin's house, begging for a meal in exchange for a song. David Virgin was impressed by what he heard, and before long had produced David's first album, called 'listener'. around this time (the exact chronology is uncertain), David was thumbing a ride north when he was picked up by travelling puppeteer and renaissance man Jimmy Willing in his horse and cart. during the slow journey there was plenty of time for conversation (at which Jimmy is no slouch), and they soon realised that they had some musical tastes in common. before long David had joined the band Jimmy Willing & the Real Gone Hick-Ups, playing acoustic guitar and singing back-up on their debut self-titled album.
in 2005 David began to perform under the name D.R.A.M., playing with whatever drummers he could find that were not in rehab or in jail, most usually Mad Matt Elliott. he was also seen moonlighting with various bands such as Blurter, the Box Monsters and Black Train, and was reported to have shared stages with luminaries like Christa Hughes of Machine Gun Fellatio, Dan Rumour of the Cruel Sea and Daevid Allen of Gong. on the fourth of july 2007 ('dependence day') during a run through the wild regions of the australian outback with renegade country rock & rollers the Re-Mains David came close to checking out when the van collided with a massive brahman cow, shattering his right leg into tiny pieces. the glue holding the pieces together is just now beginning to take hold.
