With members from Romania, Hungary, Brazil and Australia, high energy Gypsy band Lolo Lovina (meaning "Red Beer" in Gypsy) draw influences from Eastern Europe, Spain, and Latin America. Band Members: Matthew Baistow: Matthew has played guitar & banjo professionally in Australia and Ireland since 1995 in a diverse range of styles: rock, jazz, folk, Irish and classical music. He has a BMus(hons) in Composition from Newcastle University, and received a scholarship to study honors at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2005.Sarah Bedak-Rockliffe: Sarah has been surrounded by Gypsy music from an early age as she comes from a musical Hungarian Romany (Gypsy) family. Her Grandfather played violin for Sandor Lakatos and for the Bobe Gaspor Erno Orkestra in Budapest, Hungary. Sarah’s professional musical career started at age seven at the Regent Theatre, Sydney. Credits include: Khamoro (Czech Romany Band), Rigo Baci, Cicada, the Martinitsa Choir and Lolo Lovina.Leonid Beshei: Leonid grew up in Bukovina which borders the Ukraine & Romania. He started playing the accordion at a very young age & went on to study Button Accordion at the Chermovtse Institude of music, Bukovina. Some credits include: Phillharmonic & Folkloric orchestra’s in Ukraine and Moldova, playing Jazz and Gypsy music all over USSR & Europe as well as playing brass in the USSR Army band with over 1200 other musicians! After arriving in Sydney, Leonid played brass in the Army reserve band and has played in countless festivals and venues around Australia.David Carr: David completed a Bmus.studies(musicology) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2004, and has studied with many influential and inspirational teachers including Judy Bailey, Bill Motzing, James Muller, Joseph Tawadros, Ben Hauptmann, John Morris, Steve Brien and Richard Anderson. He performs in several groups, including Lolo Lovina, Mariachi Australia and Tapestries of Sound.Jess Randall: Jess’ music has garnered airplay on Triple J and been used across a wide array of soundtrack projects, including films at the Berlin International Film Festival, a documentary on artistic roller skating, and perhaps the ultimate in bizarre applications: accompanying the Australian Olympic Duet team at the FINA World Synchronised Swimming Championships. Her amazing fiddle playing can also be heard in folk duo Will of the Wood and psycho gypsy metal project The Crooked Fiddle Band.Rodrigo Salgado: Rodrigo’s studies include double bass at the Conservatorium of Gustav Hitter, Brazil; music Composition at the University of Brazillia, Brazil; and electric bass at Escola de Musica de Brazillia, Brazil. He has performed with banda 80, orquestra Motown, Trio Samauma, Banda Joao Ninguem, Rent- the musical, MPtrio and Lolo Lovina.
Influences: Eastern European Gypsy music, French, Irish, Tango, Heavy metal, and all good music. Some of our favorite artists include but are not limited to: Roby Lakatos, Taraf, Bratch, Piaf, Bamboula Ferret, Jacques Brell, Tom Waits, Astor Piazzolla, Besh o Drom, the Crooked Fiddle Band, Kulture Shock, Gogo Bordello, Les Yeux Noir, Monsieur Camembert & Arbat
