WOODS SESH [FREE PARTY] 07/07/07:
Trades Club (12/1/07):
Depthcutz is a drum'n'bass, hip-hop and reggae night based in Halifax. The night was born as a result of shared musical interests amongst members of the crew 'SHC' (forerunner of 'FTWO'). Sometime around 2000 brothers Sty and Gav put on a number of parties in their parent's garage in Skircoat. After numerous complaints from neighbours about graffiti, noise and litter they decided to seek out another venue that could accomodate such scally wag behaviour. In Bar Up we found our new home.
The first event at Bar Up took place in December 2002. Since then there have been events at many other venues, including the Paradise Club, Leeds (July 2005), a Warehouse in Sowerby Bridge (Sept 2003), Copley Woods (Sept 2006, July 2007 & July 2008), The Royal Oak, Halifax (Sept 2006, Nov 2006 & Nov 2007) and the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge (Sept 2006, Jan 2007, Sept 2007 & Aug 2008). After problems with the police and Calderdale council - plus front page coverage in the local press for all the wrong reasons - Bar Up closed its doors for good in September 2007.
Residents since day one have been Vamos, 2 Kool Tony, 42 Blues, Xedaw and Page Pullout. Since then the likes of Northern Property, MC D Double, Shinobi D, Ragcat, Joe Black, G Lilly, Damaga, A-Talon (Sentinel), Audio Demon and Bass have also featured regularly. Over forty DJs and MCs have played at Depthcutz over the past five years with guests including DJ Excalibah (1xtra/datsound), Break (metalheadz/quarantine/dnaudio), DJ Steppa (subdub/radius/metropolis), Tonn Piper (metropolis), Prophecy (metropolis), Skeez (metropolis/jump), Distinction (subdub/exodus), Slackears (chapter 4), Ruckspin (legends/central beatz) and LD50 (central beatz).
One of our most high profile events took place at Paradise Club in Leeds in July 2005 and featured Pendulum (breakbeat kaos), Dirty Diggers (zebra traffic) and Kulak (locus/therapy sessions). The event was part of Pendulum's 'Hold Your Colour' album launch tour.
Over the years Depthcutz has built up a reputation for its good vibes and quality DJs and MCs. It is pretty much the only event in Calderdale where you will hear hip-hop, drum'n'bass and reggae and (to our knowledge) is the longest-running hip-hop and drum'n'bass night in West Yorkshire. It was also the first night in West Yorkshire outside of Leeds to host a dubstep DJ.
A final mention to all the unsung heroes who have helped out with Depthcutz over the years... Doug, Beav, Rza and Jane spring to mind but there are more... people who are always willing to give up an hour to sit on the door, design flyers or carry heavy equipment at 4am, even when they're totally wrecked and everyone else is on their way to the after party! Jah know ya big!
