About Me

Hello there. I'm John, a 21-year-old who's just finished his History degree and is about to step out into the big wide world as a grown up (eek). Despite being something of a Franophile and Russophile, I'm from Somerset originally, but you wouldn't know it from my (lack of) accent. I'm also a gaysexual, but you wouldn't know it from my mannerisms (I hope...)

I play keyboards and a little guitar, and sometimes try to write songs too. If you can't already tell, a lot of my life revolves around music (like a lot of people on Myspace, basically).

I also like drinking, cooking (spicy food is teh win), and watching DVDs, as well as socialising (which often involves at least one of those things). Quiet nights in, evenings at the pub, or dancing in a club like an idiot until 2am- all are fine with me.Top Friends are now arranged alphabetically, to avoid confusion and/or favouritism. I love all of you!

My Interests

History, in particular the English Civil War, the Russian Revolution / Stalinist regime, medieval, French revolution/Napoleonic- it changes, really. Also literature and films and probably a bunch of other stuff. Staying up stupidly late in front of my laptop. I play keyboards and sort-of-ish guitar. (Old school) Sonic the Hedgehog games are awesome, also SimCity 4, The Sims, Total Annihilation, and Mario.

I'd like to meet:

Cool people, friendly people, interesting people, fun people. I usually come across as either quiet and odd at first, or an obnoxious drunk, so people who are willing to look past first impressions. People who aren't complete stereotypes, whether than means "roarr death to false metal!" stereotypes or camp gay stereotypes, be yourself! People I don't have a lot in common with can be just as interesting as people I do have a lot in common with.

Ideally I'd like to make more gay friends, as most of my current friends are big hairy hetero metalheads (as much as I love them, of course). Not camp scene-queens though, just nice ordinary people I can talk about boys with and maybe explore the gay scene a little more with.

Music:

Name any decent rock band/artist from the 60s and 70s, or metal band from the 70s to today, and chances are I either like them or just haven't heard them yet for some reason. I'm also fond of some jazz, blues, classical, Motown/funk-type stuff, and even a bit of alternative, albeit mostly from the 80s. Ask me about particular bands if you wish, or better yet, recommend me things I haven't heard yet.

I'm something of an obsessive music collector- I've accumulated hundreds of CDs over the years. Few things are more exciting to me than hearing an album I've not heard before and wondering where it's been my whole life.

Current favourites: Death- Symbolic, George Harrison- All Things Must Pass, Derek And The Dominoes- Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, Overkill- The Years Of Decay, The Zombies- Odessey & Oracle, The Cure- Disintegration, Children Of Bodom- Hatebreeder

Movies:

Star Wars Episodes 4-6, Lord Of The Rings, Spinal Tap, Nightmare Before Christmas (I saw it when it first came out, you posers!) & most other Tim Burton films, Monty Python films (especially Holy Grail), The Godfather, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Mysterious Skin

Television:

Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, South Park, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Spongebob Squarepants, League of Gentlemen, Friends... cartoons and comedies mainly. Hollyoaks is also a guilty pleasure.

Skins is really not my thing, I'm afraid to say (however hot Mitch Hewer may be)

Books:

Tolkein, Lovecraft, Orwell, Huxley, Terry Pratchett (met him!)

Simon Sebag Montefiore: The court of the red Tsar

Orlando Figes: A people's tragedy

Books on Russian, French or British history. I love reading, with university starting to wind down now I've taken it up again. Have just finished Bulgakov's The Master And Margarita. I think I'll get back on the Terry Pratchett next.

Heroes:

Jeffree Star. Haha, not really. Paul Robeson, John Coltrane, George Orwell, John Lilburne, Francois-Noel Babeuf, Frank Zappa, Bill Hicks- anyone who stands up for their beliefs regardless of persecution. If I'm allowed to count fictional characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Dr. Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan, David Lister, and Jack Skellington.
