We met this artist at the Allied Media Conference in 2005... I think she counts as an "interest"
Someday we'd love to meet Ain't Jamama! Enjoy images of commodified mammyisms turned on the ear.
PRO-FEMINIST! PRO-ACTIVIST! PRO-WOMYN! PRO-TRANSGENDER!
You don't have to be a girl to be a feminist, and you can quote me on that! We wanna hook up with anyone involved in the following: cultural production, gender activism, anti-racism, classism, ageism, anti-violence, poverty and global economics, anti-corporate stuff, indie-media, radical education... you get the vibe. We are open to feminists of all stripes, creeds, colors... we hope to be a place to express and explore "difference". We wanna see your work on this stuff and share it with other people.
Ladyfest Ohio meets every Tuesday @7:30pm at the Surly Girl Saloon . Meetings are open to all who are pro-womyn. We usually score a table near the back of the bar... you will know us by the racous laughter, but if you're not sure if it's us or not, all the bar peeps know us by now. Just ask! While our group is Columbus-based, we support meetings anywhere in Ohio! Write us with questions!

A note about adding friends:
We're overwhelmed with your interest and love. Really. We've been getting a gajillion friend requests a day as of late, which is truly exciting. Because of the sheer volume, it's been getting a little difficult to manage it all. Often times we need to make tough decisions about whether or not we can handle all the love... which means sometimes we don't add everyone. Doesn't mean we don't think you're swell, or feminist enough, or whatever. Truly, we are conflicted by our acts of exclusion. It's not meant to be political -- it's simply logistical. To ward off the craziness, we've needed to re-commit and focus ourselves to supporting the under-represented, specifically in the Midwest, and especially those women out there who are not a group or project, but just Midwestern feminists looking for other like-minded women. We also like to add folks from "anywhere" whom our Midwestern base could either utilize or learn from... activist networking if you will.
Having said all that, please ask to be added anyway. If you don't get added, take a peek at our f-list... you might find the type of folks you were hoping to connect to. Finally, I try to say something witty to everyone we do add... but somedays I'm just not that funny. While your silence may not protect you, my own will sometimes protect you from awful jokes on your comment page. You can thank me later ;0) One caveat: We will not add anyone whose profile is set to "private"... we need to see who you are. If you are a "private" person, please send us a message telling us why we should add you. Otherwise, don't bother.*****************************************************

A NOTE TO PIMPS Okay... didn't think this would be necessary, but I've got ask some of you this. WHY would anyone identifying as a "pimp" want to friend a feminist collective? We can dig that you're an indie filmmaker and/or performer... undiscovered, underfunded, underappriciated, it's tough, we know, we sympathize. But if you're glorifying rather than deconstructing and challenging the dichotomy of pimp/ho and ignoring the racist, sexist, homophobic and classist systems that make that dichotomy possible, pretty please don't waste our time. It's a form of slavery of men and women and all those inbetween, and we're not buying it. You don't need our support anyway... it's an easy commodity, EVERYONE ELSE is buying it. And for the record, much love and support to the women making their living on the erotic, by choice or for survival... no one works harder. ************************************************************

SPECIAL TOP FRIENDS: ACTING LOCALLY -or- YOUR MOM GOES TO COMFEST
As Comfest and Columbus Pride festivities decend upon us, it might be time for a lil' local love. Below are local arty-peeps, organizers, and rabble rousers that make Columbus suck so much less. LFO knows how hard you work, and we continue to be inspired and grow because of you. There are a TON of our friends that should be on that list... if you're not seein' your self here, it's just cuz I got tired digging through the profiles. Rest assured, you are loved and appreciated.
One of our coolest events invovled Gaye Adegbalola with Roddy Barnes... if you don't know who Gaye is, FIND OUT NOW!! Music featured during the 2005 fest: The Rememberings, Drew Miller Davis, Marsha Bradee, Broadband, Da Lyrica, Donna Magavero, Sarah Asher, The Blue Belles (Eve Warnock), Fat Girls
By The Snack Table, Blue Umbrellas, Red Dahlia, The Cinema Eye, Pamela Means, Malachi, Ranier Maria, Tracy Walker, Burning Sage,
General stuff we dig: of course the "godmother" difranco, bitch n' animal, the butchies, fruit, boris, emmie lou harris, laurie anderson, nellie mckay, tracy + the plastics, the gossip, ladytron, sleater-kinney, aqui, p j harvey, sara jones, sonic youth, the yeah yeah yeahs, slumber party, the bangels, lover lover, glass candy, bikini kill, superduper, elastica, scrawl, le tigre, frostiva, ember swift, peaches, madonna, joan jett, bjork, cat power, veruca salt, and so much more. didn't see your favorite? don't worry... this changes all the time.
We made a new friend recently that is awesome... The Females of Hip Hop. It's a "herstory" of hip hop, and a resource for women in hip hop to support one another. Get yourself schooled:

Check this shit out... righteous anger that really upset one of our myspace buddies. Sorry we can't all sing "My Name is Luca" forever.
This here is our buddy Alyson's video. Enjoy!

It's worth mentioning that S.I.R. Video has been very generous in the past, allowing us to publicly screen their films for fundraising purposes. Check out P.M.S. Media for some excellent indie docs. Have you seen "Not For Sale" ? It's a doc about the 1970s feminist art movement, and a MUST if you consider yourself at all arty.
Filmmakers we've screened in 2005: Hallie Bourne, Hristina Panovska, Penny Lane, Maria Takacs, Katrin Kremmler, Sue Rumph
General stuff we've seen and enjoyed... Queen Christina, Hedwig, Watermelon Woman, Daughters of the Dust, Lust in the Dust, Boys Don't Cry, The Royal Tennenbaums, Go Fish, Iron Jawed Angels, Control Room, Hook or by Crook, In the Company of Wolves, anything with zombies in it, Wild Zero. Have you seen "Stacy"? It will make your eyes cross. We also like movies made by Lizzie Borden. Some of us liked "Tank Girl" while others are bored by boobies.
Martha Stewart shows. ummm... someone else wrote that. We're conflicted about TV. Many of us like reality stuff, are addicted to Lost, can't get enough of Passions, see themselves in the L-Word. Personally, i heart jon stewart, colbert, and monty python re-runs, Battlestar Gallactica and Dead Like Me. We'd be fucked without Lucille Ball. Did someone say "AB FAB"? We miss Xena and Buffy. I'm glad no one remembers Colista Flockhart. You gotta give props to Oprah, Ellen, and Rosie, Will n'Grace, Queer Eye. He is a terrible feminist, but we miss Dave Chapelle. And it's about time Margaret Cho got her fabulous ass back on TV. Why are none of us watching that show about a female president?
Personally again, Golden Girls and Laverne and Shirley re-runs aside, I'd like to detonate the Lifetime channel, the network for victims (we're SURVIVORS, baby!) Oxygen channel holds no appeal... are we not the target audience somehow? WTF?
Holy poo... this would take forever. Read everything with a critical eye, and knowledge of the when's and why's of it's writing. Almost all of our "heros" wrote something... start with them. For what it's worth, if "art" is your thing, start with The Power of Feminist Art edited by Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard. Both Coco Fusco and Ella Shohat have written eloquently on colonialism, feminism and art.
If you're a writer or spoken word performer, there's this really cool resource for getting your stuff on tour! Check out Let's Do It on the Road .
We at casa de Ladyfest O also believe in laughing... your feminist comic book intake is a must. Check out Mikhaela Blake Reid, Jennifer Camper, and of course Alison Bechdel!
