.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..Sai Fiyah was born in Kingston Jamaica on September 19th, 1977 at St. Joseph's Hospital. He spent most of his youth moving back and forth between New York City and Kingston. Like several other Jamaican-born artists, his first musical inspiration was Bob Marley, as he grew up around his parents and elders who were avid fans of the reggae legend's music. His desire to become a vocal artist began at 14 years of age when he would sing and DeeJay (Jamaican or reggae style of dancehall rap) in the boy's bathroom among large audiences of his peers. His high school friend would beat against the walls of a concrete shower stall to create a beat or "riddim".
When he was 17 years old he moved to back to the U.S. to live with his mother in Connecticut, where he soon befriended fellow displaced New Yorkers. Also a huge fan of hip-hop music, thanks to his New York inner city roots, these friends familiarized him with freestyle rapping. He soon became a natural and began writing rhymes. He further perfected his art when he went away to college, where he would grab the mic and do impromptu performances in front of large audiences of his college peers. The numerous and overwhelmingly positive responses he received soon earned him a solid reputation as a skilled wordsmith, which pushed him to pursue a career as a hip hop MC. He began working with several unknown producers and artists in pursuit of stardom. He performed in several MC battles, underground showcases and doing live broadcasts on college radio shows. This pursuit continued long after he graduated from college. He soon began working with an aspiring underground producer named J-Loud who placed himself and his partner at the time, Diz-Dutch on several bills as an opening act for many well-known underground acts, such as Cage, Def Jux, The Juggaknots, Wordsworth, Kool Keith, Pumpkinhead, Jean Grey, Breez Evahflowin, just to name a few. He performed at legendary underground venues, such as The Knitting Factory and The Lion's Den, among others.
After limited success as an underground MC and a few unproductive meetings with industry reps, he began to return to his roots, dabbling in dancehall reggae. When he began performing reggae songs at his shows, he found that he received an even more overwhelming response from crowds, who seemed to be as much in awe of the fact that he was a Jamaican, as they were that his music was actually good. Upon realizing the comfort level he felt with dancehall reggae and the liberty to express himself in a way that best suited him, he decided to focus on the music art of his native country.
Now hailing from the Bronx, he has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the deep Jamaican community there. Wowing crowds at various clubs and performance spaces, such as Copacabanas (formerly Escape Lounge), Mingles, Harlem Black Theatre, Whispers, Tropic, and the Flamingo Lounge. He had a brief stint as an artist under the notorious John Shop Records label, alongside established artists, such as Major Damage, Tony Panic, Zoomjay, Iceman, Don Angelo, and legend Yami Bolo. However, he is now a member of the fledgling Garrison Life Music, which boasts a group of talented up and coming artists, spearheaded by Ice aka IceMan aka I-San, a rising star in the dancehall community, Shane Rolla, O-Banga, Shayka, among others.
Aside from his appearance, the main thing that sets Sai Fiyah apart is his musical versatility. His ability to sing, DeeJay, rap, as well as produce his own music, has likely left him well positioned to become one of the genre's next great names!
