Matthew Corpuz, known by his stage name Velosity is an American rapper, songwriter, and recording artist of Filipino descent. Born in Los Angeles, California, his stage name, Velosity, was given to him by his younger brother because of his quick ability at a young age to enhance his rap skills during his adaptation to hip-hop. “The name Velosity reminds me everyday that there will always be somebody who is working harder than you, so that motivates me to keep striving for the ultimate goal, which is to be the best musical talent I can be.â€, Velosity states. Velosity was exposed to hip-hop during his childhood but didn’t start listening to it when he was 12, and by the time he was 13 he had decided to pursue a career in hip-hop seriously. He started writing songs and began recording at his home when he was 14. “What mainly influences me to make music is not particularly a certain artist per se, but my adoration for the hip-hop culture. It’s a beautiful thing.†Velosity responds when asked about who influences him to rap. He is also aware of the change hip-hop has undergone. “Hip-hop is definitely not what it used to be, but it’s my goal to create music that enables older listeners to reminisce and younger listeners to acquaint themselves with that old school essence, but at the same time with the vibe of new school I present.†Velosity is known for his innovative style and swagger when he raps. He states, “I bring a diverse range of sound to the listener. I make music with meaning, and also containing different concepts in my songs that are delightful to any hip-hop fan.†Velosity has recorded over 300 songs in his career but has learned that it’s about the quality and not the quantity. He says, “Even though I have recorded a mass amount of songs in my career, I’ve learned that it’s about having a unique image and sound, and as of now I’m confident with what I bring to the table.†Even though at a young age, Velosity has had some memorable moments in his short career. Velosity has promoted his music by performing at open mics and several venues in Los Angeles and Las Vegas including The Roxy in the famous Sunset Strip and the Knitting Factory in Hollywood. He has also been featured in the Filipino Program Kababayan L.A. on Channel 18 for an interview segment and a few performances. Velosity loves what he does and with his natural drive for success and constant improvement, the sky’s the limit for this young phenom.
