Jansport J, with his name originating as a comedic poke to his habit of taking his backpack EVERYWHERE, is an up-and-coming producer based out of Covina, California. He is on a quest to bring positive, honest music to the masses.

“Growing up as a kid, I grew up listening to a range of Hip Hop music with my older sister. Whether it be NWA, EPMD, A Tribe Called Quest, or Luke. The music was straight-forward and was a realistic representation of their life and views. I feel like that’s what we’ve lost, and I aim to bring back the soul of the music.”

His foray into music initially was writing rhymes in the back of his Sophomore Spanish Class at Glendora High in 2001. He cites Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint” and Jurassic 5’s “Quality Control” as lyrical inspiration back then.

“I can just remember listening to those 2 albums back in ’01, and getting hyped. The raps were dope. The beats moved me to where I had to pick up the pen myself.”

Jansport J would continue to write and record raps with his friend Zeeshan. The creation of these humorous songs began his exploration of the Fruity Loops beat program in 2002.

“I always wanted to produce, ever since I heard Timbaland’s ‘Life in Da Bassment’ album back in ’97. I just never had an outlet or equipment to do so. When Zee acquired the program, I knew my heart and sights were set on this section of the music industry.”

Jansport J would go on to practice his craft, using each song as a means to improve.

“I have tracks in my music library that I refer to as ‘Stepping Stone Beats’. You can tell by listening to them what I had just learned how to do, or how to flip a track in a certain way to create a specific vibe or feeling. I continue to have ‘Stepping Stone Beats’ to this day.”

With the focus and care that Jansport J applies to his skill, coupled with the drive and passion for his music, one must wonder what Jansport J believe the future has in store for him.

“I just want to focus on marketing these beats to artists and movements that are about positivity and on the rise. I get joy out of being part of the rise. I am excited for the challenge. My goal is similar to anybody else’s goal in life; to make a living out of what I am most passionate about. For me, that is creating music that resonates with my fans in all facets and emotions in life.”
