Butterside Down

About Me

One boring Saturday night at Birdland, Paul and Norm were drinking beers and talking about there new project, Get Him (Paul & Norm with a drum machine). Don MacDonld walks up and says, he's sick of everything and wants a new band to front. That Sunday, the three head to a rehearsal space on Almond St. and conjure up a strange brew of Deepwoods Don, and disco drum beats, with drop C guitar tunings. It wasn't long before they realized, they needed a real drummer. They rounded up Jeff Hayden and the Get Him project was now a real band. After some horrible attempts to record an unreleasable demo in Beaverbank, Jeff Hayden left and was replaced by Deep Woods drummer Rob Francis. Now a complete fusion between Marbleyardape and Deep Woods. Butterside Down was formed. The boys recorded the three song Buzzer ep with Terry Pulliam in early 1996 and opened up for a few big name acts like Gob, Pure, Rusty & Grimskunk. They received a factor grant to record the next four song demo in December of 1996 and added the second guitarist Dave Chisholm to the mix. BSD finally started corresponding with Artist Direct, booking agency in California, when Rob Francis fell in love with a blonde hottie from Newfoundland, and took off with her to the west coast. BSD lost a lot of momentum after the loss of Rob and it wasn't until they met drummer Iain Jardine in June, that their songs would be powerful again. BSD played a few more shows that summer, like the first Hemp Fest on the Halifax commons but they soon started to split down the middle and broke up in August 1997. Don MacDonald wanted to go a lot heavier then the direction BSD was going. So the boys agreed to end it on a good note. They got shut down in the middle of a set, at a lame bar called the Tickle Trunk.
