The first band i ever got into was Bon Jovi, if not for them, I may have never discovered rock, hair metal, thrash, punk and rock in general but because I did I still love theose genres as much as ever and don't really have the time for anything else I find for me at least, that most other musics lacks creativity, passion or true soul so for that at least i have to say thankyou to Bon Jovi.
But i would say today i have evolved and now listen to much more complex and darker forms of metal. Not because i am some secret revolutionary satanist no, but, because I have grown to appreciate the complexity, introcacies, arrangements and passion that have gone into some absolutely beautiful, powerful, aggressive and moving pieces of music. Take my current favourite band Nightwish, the past three albums the sheer complexity and care taken into the arrangement to allow the orchestra to thrive and add a whole dimension to the experience of their music. Toumas haipolinen is pure modern musical genius and his subject matter and lyrical ability is just pure poetry. If you haven't heard them give it a try with a complete open mind best albums Century Child, Once and Dark Pasion play.
Other great examples are Opeth, Dimmu Borgir and Machine heads last album The Blackening.
