The idea for McCann's Cans came to life at the Winter FanFest on February 4, 2006. Andy and Matt, two dedicated Braves fans, stood in lines and hung out at Turner Field in the rain/snow mix and waited for autographs from some of their favorite players and coaches. There would have been three fans there, but Andrew had to work that day. Andy and Matt, however, left the stadium that day more excited than ever about the upcoming season, and the craziness that would ensue.
In 2005, the "Baby Braves" brought new excitement to a city that has gotten used to winning. After winning 13 straight division championships, there was a lot of doubt that a 14th would be possible. However, our rookies proved everyone wrong, and the Braves sailed through to the playoffs again. Names like Francoeur, Langerhans, Betemit, and McCann became household names. We were all eager to see what McCann and Francoeur could do in place of the struggling Estrada and Mondesi, and they did not disappoint.
Part of the excitement with the Braves' youngsters is that some of them are local boys. They grew up loving the Braves, and many of the local fans actually know them.
Jump forward a few months to the NLDS. Andrew and Andy were at Game 2, and went crazy when Duluth High alum Brian McCann, went deep off Roger Clemens. The crowd went insane, and McCann instantly became another fan favorite.
McCann's Cans' official debut was April 15th, 2006 vs. the Padres. Smoltz pitched a shutout. The "cans" are made from PVC from Home Depot and fabric from Wal-Mart. Andy's mother sewed everything. Screenprinting was done by Game Time Sports in Hickory Flat, GA. (Thanks for the good deal!)
