The Benefits of Being a Vegetarian:
Less risk of disease.
Data are strong that vegetarians are at lesser risk for obesity, atonic constipation, lung cancer, and alcoholism. Evidence is good that risks for hypertension, coronary artery disease, type II diabetes, and gallstones are lower. Data are only fair to poor that risks of breast cancer, diverticular disease of the colon, colonic cancer, calcium kidney stones, osteoporosis, dental erosion, and dental caries are lower among vegetarians. Reduced risks for chronic degenerative diseases can also be achieved by manipulations of omnivorous diets and lifestyles.
Longer life.
When vegetarian Marie-Louise Meilleur was named as the
world's oldest person at 122, the usual hunt for her secret
to longevity followed.
Meilleur, who died six years ago, was one of a long line of
holders of the title as the world's oldest person whose
diets had been exclusively or largely vegetarian. Every
now and then remarkably old people such as her emerge,
although usually they are found among geographically
isolated agrarian peoples whose diets are primarily
vegetarian.
There has never been any definitive proof of how much
extra life a vegetarian can expect.
Not until now. New research shows that being a
vegetarian for 20 years or more adds almost four years to
the average lifespan.
Dr Pramil Singh of Loma Linda University in California,
who led the research, says, "We are the first to come up
with a life-expectancy figure showing a very important
increase in life expectancy for those who follow a
vegetarian diet for a long period of time."
In the research, he and other epidemiologists analysed
long-term data from a group of Adventists who have been
monitored for more than 40 years. They also reviewed
data from six other studies, including two in Britain and
one in Germany. One of the two British studies showed a
20 per cent drop in mortality among vegetarians", while
the German study suggested an even greater reduction.
. "What we have in the Adventists is a group of people ...
who wind up being vegetarian for a long time," Dr Singh
said. "That is enough people with which to make mortality
comparisons."
Meat Production = Environmental Devastation.
The reason why many tropical rainforests and other
ecosystems are destroyed is so land can be planted with
grass to graze livestock for meat production. This
environmental destruction leads to the growth of deserts
which now account for a massive 29% of the land on
Earth. More than half the water used in the United States
is used for raising animals for food. It takes 25 gallons of
water to produce a pound of wheat, but 2500 gallons
water to produce a pound of meat. Furthermore, feedlots
and slaughterhouses are major polluters of rivers and
streams, filling them with poisonous residues and
untreated animal wastes. For instance, it is estimated that
250,000 pounds of animal excrement are produced in the
US every second and there are no sewage systems to
treat these wastes.
Meat Production = A Huge Waste Of Grain That Could
Feed Starving People.
Over 40% of the world's grain harvest is fed to animals
going to slaughter for meat consumption in the First
World. At the same time there are millions of people
starving in the Third World. Consider the wastage of food
energy when it takes 16 kilograms of grain and soy to
produce just 1 kilogram of beef, or 3 kilograms of chicken.
If the grain which is now fed to livestock was fed to
people, there would be more than enough food to support
a much larger human world population.
Eating Meat Leads to Calcium Deficiency.
Animal products also deplete calcium from the body. The
more animal protein in the diet, the more acidic the blood
becomes. In order to neutralize this acidity, calcium is
pulled from the bones into the blood and is eventually lost
in the urine. This is why osteoporosis is much more
common in populations with the typical meat-based
Western diet.
Meat Your Meat
Were we built to eat meat?
What if you were killed for your fur?
What are you wearing?
What is in your glass of milk?
Is drinking milk natural?
