He married his sweetheart in an intimate ceremony in a small chapel.The next evening, he died in a traffic accident. "He was the best thing that ever happened to me," said his wife, Marylyn.The 21-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine apparently lost control of his Honda 600 FS motorcycle while driving south on East Vista Way and collided with a truck turning left into a restaurant driveway. The collision knocked Hill into the path of a northbound truck, which struck and killed him.Hill married Marylyn, 22, at a Vista chapel. They honeymooned at the Hotel Del Coronado that night. On Tuesday, he was traveling to church on his motorcycle, when he was involved in the crash around 7:20 p.m.Marylyn Hill sat in the living room of their apartment Wednesday looking at a small shrine set up on her dining table with photographs of the two of them, including wedding mementos. Through the day, she watched a videotape of her wedding. "I'm just glad I can still watch this and smile," she said."This was the happiest time of my life, too. I've been through some rough times," she added.She would feel fine one moment, then her husband's death could come rushing back as well-meaning visitors knocked on her door to offer condolences.The couple met through a friend in March. He had asked her to marry him last month. They wanted to get married right away, but they decided to invite family, and Valentine's Day appeared to be the perfect time. His family came from Detroit and his father, the Rev. Garland L. Hill Sr., conducted the ceremony. The family had just left Tuesday. All of the couple's money was invested in the ceremony."Like everybody, we wanted to have kids in the future," she said.The day after the wedding, Marylyn Hill said she dropped her husband off at a friend's house, where he had left his motorcycle. One of the last questions she asked him was whether he would be OK. He assured her he would. She then went home.She became worried when it grew late, knowing that he would call if he was going to be late. She learned of his death early Wednesday when her husband's best man, a fellow Marine, arrived at the apartment with the news.She said she is awaiting the results of the traffic investigation because she cannot imagine that he would speed since he was still very cautious on the motorcycle. He had just gotten it in October, she said.Hill said her husband had recently gotten more involved with the Second Missionary Baptist Church and was going to play drums to accompany the choir practice today. She said he attended church every Sunday and Wednesday.Friends of the couple were at Hill's side helping to comfort her Wednesday."He was loving and caring," family friend Erica Grimmett said. "He's loved and missed very much right now."John Hill was assigned to the 1st Intelligence Battalion, I-MHG, where he worked as computer technician with communication and radio repair.In addition to his wife and father, Hill is survived his mother, Francine A.
