Benjamin Sun
Originally from China, he is Hawaii's ERHU Master, recording artist and performer. He has recorded many top selling CDs and has recieved many
awards and honors throughout his career for the Erhu and other instruments including the piano and trombone. He graduated from the Wuhan Conservatory
of Music in China and performed in concerts as the featured artist with the
Operatic Academy of Wuhan. He also graduated in music at Brooklyn University
in New York.
Since then, he has competed and won the regional Erhu competitions in the United States. Benjamin has also competed and was honored first place in Chinese singing in New York and Hawaii and won first place in the male catagory in the West American region. Since 1998, He has been honored at a series of command performances in Beijing with the Central Ballet Orchestra of China.
The ERHU is one of the most popular Chinese traditional musical instruments. Played with a bow and has only 2 strings, it became poular in China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.)ERHU (Chinese: Hanyu Pinyin: èrhú), sometimes known in the West as the 'Chinese violin' or Chinese two string fiddle, is a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras. It belongs to the huqin family of bowed string Chinese instruments, together with the zhonghu, gaohu, banhu, jinghu, sihu, and numerous others.
