The StopMotion Men

About Me

We are a three piece band from Cardiff who play film inspired Alternative Rock. Our aim is to combine film with live music, by working with film makers who create their own interpretation of our songs then project them live on stage.
Our inspiration is drawn from the music and films we love, from Pearl Jam and Danny Elfman to Smashing Pumpkins and Holst, we would like to thank our disposable society for its endless source material.

16.8.07 A year in the making here's my latest work for The StopMotion Men (ON ALL YOUR WALLS). When I make the films for the band I always begin the same way: I close my eyes and listen to the song on loop for about two hours until I get a real feel for the dynamics. Then I read the lyrics and discuss with Geraint where he was coming from when he wrote them. I then go back and listen to the song again with this in mind. By this point I usually have a very strong idea of what I want to do. The problem arises when I realise I need a crew, a budget and equipment that maybe only James Cameron could get together! Pretty much from the moment I heard On All Your Walls I had an image of an old lady tearing her skin off so that a young beautiful girl could climb out. This was clearly something I couldn't do with live action so I decided instead to go the animated route. I really wanted to go for a cardboard cut out Sali Mali meets Doctor Seuss look and so decided to hand draw the images myself which came out really well. Learning After Effects from scratch took time but was great fun and I'm really pleased with the results. I hope you enjoy.

Sounds Like: "Urgent and at times manic expression... A band on the verge of something big..."
Bristol University Magazine

"Strong narrative, story led songs with some unique twists and sonic tidal waves...A band marked by intelligence, creativity, artistry and vision. Gormandising for the senses, dramatic soundtracks to the movies of your life"
Martin Kendrick, noisemakesenemies.co.uk

"With the Epic leanings of Martin Grech, and the flame-to-fuse delivery of intensity and passion throughout recalling early Pearl Jam, The StopMotion Men have created a tasty nugget of impassioned rock... perhaps this is the new wave? Either way, you’ll love it!"
Jeremy Chick, subba-cultcha.com

"Like a cross between The Hellset Orchestra and Muse...These songs are masterfully well written, delivered with real purpose and surely destined to be venue fillers"
Shane Blanchard, tastyfanzine.org.uk

"Really addictive listening...epic, intentionally cinematic...a rock sound reminiscent of Pearl Jam or even Muse at times...why aren't this band signed yet?" Rated 11 out of 13
Emma Gould, roomthirteen.com

"The StopMotion Men have thrown out the normal bass guitar and opted for a piano in there instead, giving a massive rock sound with opportunities for a huge dynamic range, which they certainly exploit to the full...They reach out with soaring melodies...Leaves me with baited breath waiting for what's coming next."
Punkscene.co.uk

"When you consider that the only instruments they play on this release are piano, guitar and drums, they certainly manage to push out a huge sound which is urgent, manic, expressive, passionate and full of vigour and goes a long way to show that this is a band in a state of rapid development.."
Don Gibbs, Hardrockhouse.com

"Innovative and imaginative, with a highly original approach.."
Dean Hill, Toudates.co.uk
