Kensington

Kensington is een nieuwe band uit Utrecht. De naam doet Britse invloeden vermoeden. Ten dele waar: sinds het oprichten van de band begin 2006 maken de jongens de muziek die zij het liefste maken: een originele combinatie van de melancholie uit de emorock gepaard met de puntige dansbaarheid van de britpop, gegoten in verassende structuren.

Al vanaf het prille begin van Kensington is er nauw samengewerkt met het Amersfoortse label Stuck In A Day Records (bekend van onder meer Snatchin’ Jenny, Impossible Situations, Wagtale en Only Seven Left), wat al resulteerde in een single waarmee de band zichzelf introduceerde, twee plaatsen op de veelbeluisterde sampler Planet Heartbreak die het label jaarlijks uitgeeft en nu de debuut-EP. Kensington speelde in korte tijd al in gerenommeerde zalen als de Melkweg, de Goudvishal, 013 en Ekko, en deelde het podium met onder anderen The Graduate (US), Under The Influence of Giants (US), Movies with Heroes (US), Green Lizard, SEVEN, Findel, Silence is Sexy en Coparck.

Momenteel werkt Kensington aan de promotie van haar debuut-EP, recht-voor-z’n-raap getiteld ‘Kensington EP’. De eind mei op Myspace uitgebrachte internetsingle ‘Man | Mission | Mayhem’ werd al meerdere malen gedraaid op verschillende radiostations, verscheen op de Popronde 2007 sampler en werd binnen een maand meer dan 5000 keer geluisterd op Myspace. Na de enorm succesvolle EP-releaseshow in een vol Stairway To Heaven (Utrecht) op 27 juni, is de band nu al weer volop aan het schrijven voor het debuutalbum, staat er een herfsttour in de planning en worden verscheidene festivals aangedaan.

Kensington: a new band from the Netherlands. The name suggests British influences. This is partially true: for a year and a half the four young men have been combining emo rock’s melancholy with pointy, dancable britpop hooks. The songs prove that experimenting with rhythm and complex song structures can result in catchy pop tunes.

Ever since their formation, Kensington has collaborated with the Amersfoort label Stuck In A Day Records (known for Snatchin’ Jenny, Impossible Situations, Wagtale and Only Seven Left), which already resulted in an introductory single, two features on the infamous ‘Planet Heartbreak’ sampler and now the self-titled debut EP. Among the bands Kensington shared the stage with are groups such as Under The Influence of Giants (US), Movies with Heroes (US), Green Lizard, SEVEN, Findel, Silence is Sexy and Coparck. At this moment, Kensington’s efforts are focused on promoting their debut EP. The internet single ‘Man | Mission | Mayhem’ which was released on Myspace at the end of May has already received airplay by several Dutch radio stations, will be featured on the Popronde 2007 sampler and has been listened to over 5000 times within the first month.

After having a succesful release show in a packed Stairway To Heaven (a well-known venue in Utrecht), Kensington is already writing new songs for their full-length debut and plans are made for a fall tour. In the meantime the band can be seen at several summer festivals, convincing crowds they are the ones to watch out for in the near future...
