Blackbirds and Blazers is a Miracle Movie. Not only is it a miracle that it was ever attempted, but its something of a miracle that it was actually completed.
When shooting finally began, the myriad of challenges that soon arose was nearly crippling. Those included: the handling of drug dealers, cast as themselves, who continued to do business on
the set; the potential of rival biker gangs erupting in violence as opposing members from both the
Outlaws and the Grim Reapers were cast; a rash of fist fights between cast members; a weary and overworked crew; and epidemic of divorces; heart attacks suffered on two different occasions by singer-songwriter/actor Billy Joe Shaver, which ultimately prevented his schedule appearance in the film; most of the cast staying in character with regard to use of certain substances; and lastly, legendary outlaw singer / actor / cult hero David Allan Coe, bringing a true element of danger and intensity to the set.The film, shot on 35 mm, presents a juxtaposed view of the
contemporary American South. From the beauty and eloquence
of a Flannery OConner novel, to the darkness of William Faulkner,
we see a modern yet mystical South, which touches issues of
relationships, politics, religion and the media.
Blackbirds and Blazers, written and directed by
K. Denton Pace, was shot on location in Nashville, Tennessee.
