HELLO TO YOU. I am The Reverend En Fuego, from the BJ Shea Morning Experience ( www.kisw.com ) on KISW in Seattle. I am an actual ordained minister (albeit from the internet). While I am able to do all of the great things that ministers can do (except for perform circumcision), I don't. The great irony is that I am in fact Athiest! Maybe agnostic. Whatever.
My best friend has heard this before, but screw globalization. Yes, it's ironic that I am posting this on the internet, but the world is full of ironies. Who cares what happens to people half a world away? Who cares what happens to people 200 miles away. What they do should not, and usually doesn't, affect me.
In our haste to learn and know everything about the world, we have shunned those who live closest to us. Those of us in our own communities. We are all urban hermits. We're strangers to the people we should know, the people who affect us the most (whether we like it or not).
Go out today. Say hello to a neighbor. Introduce yourself. Don't be a couch lizard, sitting in your womb of an apartment, basking in the warm afterglow of your computers, your televisions, your microwave dinners. Doesn't take much. Those people you befriend might be able to help you down the road when you need it.
Community is the key. Not globalization.
