I don't have a home, I have an itinerary

About Me

Musician, Composer, and World TravelerI am a professional musician (http://www.vinceconaway.com), making my living by performing original and traditional music on the hammered dulcimer. I've performed in Europe as well as throughout North America, primarily at outdoor festivals but also at bookstores , pubs, and coffee shops. I love my job, especially that in the past two years I've spent six months in Europe and I'm looking forward to keeping that pace for the next few years!

My Interests

Travel is one of the best parts of being a musician. There's no thrill like taking a road I've never seen before, especially when no one on it speaks English.

Music:

I have very eclectic musical tastes. While my performance background is in Celtic music, my original stuff tends to lean in all sorts of different directions. Right now Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, the Dresden Dolls, and Nine Inch Nails have heavy rotation on my iPod.

Movies:

I love seeing movies. There's just no comparison to seeing a movie in a theater and experiencing something really intense (whether it's humor, suspense, or drama) alongside other people. All time favorites (subject to change at a whim): High Fidelity, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects, Orgazmo, Shakespeare in Love (yes, I know, but still!), Dangerous Beauty, Dangerous Liasons, Quills, Chasing Amy, America's Sweethearts (although I don't understand why), and Ghostbusters.Closer changed my life.

Television:

As much as I love movies, I rarely watch TV. Luckily between good friends, DVD releases, and cable on demand that doesn't matter anymore. I've gotten really into Arrested Development and Studio 60 on Sunset Strip, as well as the HBO series Rome and Entourage.

Books:

I am a huge Neal Stephenson fan, and I love Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Iain Banks. Guilty pleasures include Laurell K. Hamilton and Anne Rice. I have a weakness for books of popular history as well as an earned appreciation for academic histories. To round things out I have to include J.R.R. Tolkein, Robert A. Heinlein, Louis L'Amour, and David Eddings.

L’Inverno Italiano is off to a great start!

I had a fantastic time at the SCA's Septentrian Twelfth Night event outside of Toronto! I got to see a lot of old friends (one or two that I hadn't seen since the closing of the much-lamented Ontario...

Business Theory and the Music Industry

I ran across a business theory in an audiobook recently. I've been listening to The Omnivore's Dilemma, and at one point the author compares industrial and artisanal business models (in this case, wi...

Two weeks left!

My flight to Rome leaves two weeks from today and the trip is starting to feel real. I've planned out the first three cities (Rome, Naples, Reggia Calabria) and I've got a list of potential successor...

L’Inverno Italiano is on its way!

I don't usually answer the phone when it's a number I don't know; it's often easier to just get the voice mail. I know, I know, it's terribly unprofessional and probably deeply discourteous. But tod...

Irrationality

I am not a rational being. I've always known this and I've never really regretted it. The past thirty years have been a fairly continual process of self-discovery as I figured out what makes me tick...

Making Plans

I'm going through guidebooks and starting to come up with potential itineraries for my upcoming Italy tour. Last time I concentrated on the north, this time it's the south. For the past few months I...
