Since releasing his debut mixtape ‘Learn From my Mixtape’ in 2006, Wretch 32 has firmly established himself as one of the elite artists in the Uk Urban scene. Wretch is also part of a highly popular collective known as The Movement which comprises of himself, Ghetto, Scorcher and Devlin which has helped build his ever growing fan base and perhaps an indication of why he has already sold in excess of 8,000 CD’s in independent outlets alone.
His slick word play to embed satire into lyrics has made him a firm favourite among DJ’s and captured the heart of audiences not only in the Uk but across Europe. In fact over the past 2 years the places in which Wretch has performed in include: High Wycombe, Reading, Nottingham, Colchester, Manchester, Birmingham, Astoria, Cargo, Amsterdam, Berlin, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Norway and Czech Republic (Hip Hop Kemp Festival) to name but a few of places.
His impressive work rate failed to go unnoticed by Mike Skinner and The Streets who collaborated with him in their ‘Pranging Out’ remix video however since then Wretch has gone on to collaborate with many well known artists in the industry. These include: Sway, Natty, Chipmunk, Bashy, Ghetto, Scorcher, Sincere and Davinche.
Wretch has also had a great deal of press notably for his video and single Punctuation. Some of theses are: ID Magazine, New Nation, Rwd Magazine, Touch Magazine, DJ Magazine Dancefall Dest, Crud Magazine, Rago Magazine, K’Magazine and Tottenham Journal. The support shown by BBC 1XTRA, Radio 1, Asian Network, Kiss and Choice Fm is an indication of the position that Wretch 32 has stationed himself within the UK music scene. DJ’s such as 279, Semtex, Mista Jam, Cameo, Logan, Ace and Invisible, Twin B, Shortee Blitz, One Samurai, Westwood, Mary Ann Hobbs and Steve Sutherland regularly provide him with airplay.
For the past two years Wretch has also been the main part of urban clothing manufacturer King Underapparel’s marketing campaign. This has seen him in numerous magazines distributed across Europe in magazine that not only satisfy an urban audience but also crosses over into a diverse one.
The respect for his lyricism is also shown but the campaign that Wretch has been involved in. In October 2006, the artist played a key role in MTV Base’s Black History month campaign. Marveling at Black British media icons, the artist exhibited a high level of maturity by illustrating their immense accomplishments. This year Wretch also played a key role in getting two expelled students in High Wycombe back into school and was also specially invited by Max from BBC 1xtra to discuss avenues of overcoming the current knife crime crisis.
Winning BBC 1XTRA’s first Annual Mixtape award for ‘Most Street Heat’ showed the potential of this immensely talented artist from North London and he is now ready to elevate to the next level with his impending album ‘Wretchrospective’ which is highly anticipated.
