All The World's A Stage

& aside from the obvious
which is itself open to interpretation,
it's somewhere in the width of this universal
amphitheater that he makes his debut,
hits his marks, & though often
speechless, nails his cues. A deluded
actor, wired to the script at birth,
immersed in the performance of his life.
Or improvising in vain toward a predestined
denouement. Perhaps his story is impromptu
later recalled in myth, stopping occasionally
to test the waters of the stream of conscience
squandering nevertheless sometimes
the wealth of good will, the bounty
of selfless acts. But knowing they're there
gives him courage to endure random
retribution, pestilence, disasters, genocide,
the capriciousness of cosmic justice,
continued existence a cosmic whim.
It's the sudden thunderstorm echoing
his anger, his lover bringing his thoughts
to words, the sublime landscape at dusk
the works of DaVinci, Gauguin, & Van
Gough, the silences of the poets, the stars
above the sculptures of the gods. For the inside
mountains abide above clouds & the rivers
flow down to his toes. His lines may
be inspired or mere prattle, he may strut
or fret his hour upon the stage or engage
inexplicably in heroic acts. He may even
play to the balcony. But this tale, only
when told, is significant. His meaningless
words, empy gestures are the stuff of
divinity, the essence of idiocy in the
moment of startled silence, in the instant
of shattered stillness when the enormity
takes hold of him & exits
into the mundane.
