The Honkys originated as a skiffle duo in 1997, by bassist Steve Pilace and guitarist Tim Lang. The writing duo proved to be a prolific one, as in the frame of seven months they penned over 233 songs. When Steve developed technical virtuosity, and began utilizing the other three strings, they opened a torrent of creativity that called for a strong, like-minded drummer.
They found that in Mike Wolf. Though creativity eludes him, his unique backbeats created the necessary element in The Honkys newly forged direction. This powerful trio unknowingly and, perhaps unwillingly created a sound that had never been heard within the confines of pop music. The group found it necessary to release a record to satisfy their growing legion of fans, which resulted in the breakthrough debut EP…, Honk! The fans rejoiced, the critics praised it, and Tim’s dad built a perfectly good garden shed with red trim.
Extensive touring and appearances followed , including a brief stint as the house band at the Lake Elsinore Moose Lodge. Though extremely successful, this tour demanded precious time away from what they do best…pen musical masterpieces. As with all revolutionaries, great wasn’t good enough.
Enter Todd Smailes. Previously in the skiffle group “Martin and the Moon Cricketsâ€, a local rival to The Honkys. Mike found him talented, Tim found him compatible, and Steve found him drinking out of a sink. He brought with him a pop sensibility and musical talent that contributed in more ways than three.
Steve!! Tim!! Mike!! &Todd!! Get used to these names, cause these boys are takin’ over.
