Greetings!
This is Aisha from Like So, a rock/soul, or heavy-soul band from Brooklyn, NY. Though Like So has always been in existence as a seed in my head, you can say it officially came into being in the spring of 2001 in the living room of one Aaron Magram. I met Aaron for the first time at Vassar College (class of 1998!) through a mutual friend of ours waaaay back in 1998. It was a brief, uneventful and unmemorable meeting. We met again in 2001 (re-introduced by the same friend, mind you) and this time it stuck. Maybe the stars were aligned or something. We started playing and singing together at his place the day we met and have been doing so all over NYC ever since. We've had the pleasure playing with a number of fine musicians along the way: bassist Tara Thierry, drummers Claudio Rochat-Felix and Steve Gonzalez ( The Sharp Things ) and keyboardist Bob Byrne.
Right now, the Like So lineup includes Aaron on guitar, bassist Rich Holst (also of TST ), drummer Billy Gunnz and li'l ole me on the mic. Now, to tell you a bit about the music:
Being a child of the 80s, the soundtrack to that decade has had a profound influence on my music. I am a big fan of The Police, Grace Jones, Sade, Prince, Bob Marley, Annie Lennox, Sly and Robbie and Black Uhuru - just to name a few. Aaron, on the other hand, is into a lot of progressive rock like Yes and Genesis. And we both love and appreciate Black Sabbath.
And so, our music sounds like none of this. I can honestly say it is its own thing: a bit of soul, a bit of jazz (of which I am also a big fan-Abbey Lincoln rules!), big rock riffs and booty bouncing rhythm make up the essence of Like So. Check out tracks like Down, Move On and Never Quite Sure from our debut album for what I mean.
Speaking of our debut album... It is now finished. Aaron, Rich, Steve, Bob and I recorded it over two weekends in the summer of 2003 at Studio G in Brooklyn, NY. On hand were superb engineers Joel Hamilton (JJ Paradise Players Club) and Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, They Might Be Giants). They also mixed and mastered the record. It's out now on my own little imprint, Systren Recordings. Give it a listen soon. I hope you enjoy.
