What is SIDS?
♥Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is one of the leading causes of death among infants one month through one year of age in the United States. Typically, a parent or other caregiver puts the baby who seems healthy down to sleep and returns later to find the baby has died. No one is at fault when a baby dies of SIDS; it cant be predicted nor prevented.
A baby's death is not considered a case of SIDS when a specific cause is discovered. SIDS is considered the cause of a baby's death only when it remains unexplained .SIDS is also known as crib death, cot death, or sudden infant death, unexplained (SIDU).
SIDS is rare, it is one of the most common causes of death in babies between 1 and 12 months of age. Most babies who die of SIDS are between the ages of 2 and 4 months.
PRECIOUS CHILD
Words and Music by Karen Taylor-Good
In my dreams, you are alive and well
Precious child, precious child
In my mind, I see you clear as a bell
Precious child, precious child
In my soul, there is a hole
That can never be filled
But in my heart, there is hope
'Cause you are with me stillIn my heart, you live on
Always there never gone
Precious child, you left too soon
Tho' it may be true that we're apart
You will live forever... in my heartIn my plans, I was the first to leave
Precious child, precious child
But in this world, I was left here to grieve
Precious child, my precious childIn my soul, there is a hole
That can never be filled
But in my heart there is hope
And you are with me stillIn my heart you live on
Always there, never gone
Precious child, you left too soon,
Tho' it may be true that we're apart
You will live forever... in my heartGod knows I want to hold you,
See you, touch you
And maybe there's a heaven
And someday I will again
Please know you are not forgotten until thenIn my heart you live on
Always there never gone
Precious child, you left too soon
Tho' it may be true that we're apart
You will live forever... in my heart

What Causes SIDS?
♥The cause of SIDS is unknown. Some risk factors are associated with SIDS, although the relationships are not entirely clear. Risk factors include having a low birth weight or being born prematurely, having been part of a multiple pregnancy, lack of medical care for the mother during pregnancy, having a mother younger than 20, and being exposed to cigarette smoke. More boys than girls die of SIDS. As the baby's brain matures, this risk is reduced. However, more research is needed to determine whether there is a relationship between brain control of breathing and SIDS.
What are the symptoms?
♥Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has no symptoms or warning signs. Babies who die of SIDS seem healthy before being put to bed, show no signs of having struggled, and are often found in the same position as when they were put to bed.
How is SIDS diagnosed?
♥Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is diagnosed only when the cause of death remains unexplained even after a thorough investigation. This includes a review of the baby's and parents' medical histories, examination of the area where the baby died, and autopsy.
What can be done to prevent SIDS?
♥Taking certain precautions may decrease the risk of SIDS. The most important thing you can do is place your baby to sleep on his or her back rather than on the stomach. Also, do not allow anyone to smoke around your baby. Babies exposed to smoke have more colds and other upper respiratory infections than babies in nonsmoking households. If you smoke, do not sleep with your baby. Smoke clings to skin and clothing, exposing your baby to even more potentially harmful substances. Do not drink alcohol, use medications that make you sleep very soundly (sedatives), or use illegal drugs before sharing a bed with a baby.
In addition, keep the crib free of objects—blankets, comforters, stuffed toys, pillows—that a baby can pull over his or her head. If a blanket or quilt is needed for warmth, tuck it into the bottom of the crib so that it does not reach higher than the baby's chest. Keep the room at a temperature that feels comfortable to you.
Explain in detail on the first day of day care (or before) what you expect your child care providers or babysitters to do. Do not assume that they know guidelines for preventing SIDS.
♥ Ways to Reduce the Risk of SIDS ♥Even though the exact cause of SIDS is unknown, researchers have identified steps that caregivers can take to reduce the risk of SIDS, including:Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep, for naptime and bedtime.Make sure your baby has a safe sleeping environment, which includes:Placing the baby on a firm mattress, such as in a safety-approved crib. Research has shown that placing a baby to sleep on soft mattresses, sofas, sofa cushions, waterbeds, sheepskins, or other soft surfaces can increase the risk of SIDS; and Removing soft, fluffy bedding and stuffed toys from the baby's sleep area. Make sure you keep all pillows, quilts, stuffed toys, and other soft items away from your baby's sleep area.Make sure the baby's head and face stay uncovered during sleep. Keep blankets and other coverings away from your baby's mouth and nose. Dressing the baby in sleep clothing will avoid having to use any covering over the baby. If you do use a blanket or another covering, make sure that the baby's feet are at the bottom of the crib, the blanket is no higher than the baby's chest, and the blanket is tucked in around the bottom of the crib mattress.Don't allow your baby to get too warm during sleep. Your baby's room should be at a temperature that is comfortable for an adult. Too many layers of clothing or blankets can overheat your baby.Don't allow smoking around your baby.Make sure all of your family members, babysitters, and anyone else who cares for your child knows to put the baby on his or her back to sleep, and other ways to reduce the risk of SIDS.
