THE FUTURE SOUND OF..CROYDON?So it all began for me in the ever sunny suburb of south London.Croydon!!!!!!!!...... I attend school and move just outside of Croydon (about 5 miles) playing football, tagging, Break dancing and chasing girls, you know the usual. Breaking it would be, and watching burns as often as they happen, I loved it, and even More so the soundz that every up rockin, back spinning, Crazy Legged popper was movin too. Kitted out in Electric blue Louis jumbo chords, Nike cagoules, Adidas top tens, Nike Wimbledon's, Pringle and Lyle and Scott jumpers, Fila and Tacchini trackies it was a proper little scene and my music was being fashion by every part of it..........................................................
......The Steetsounds and the Electro series would be my first real purchases from my local Record shop in around 1984 through until 1986 (Goodness Record and Crikey flip I'm sure I must have shares in that place). Having been brought up on a heavy dosage of music that varied from The Beatles to Motown, The Kinks to James Brown, and The Who to Booker T and the MG's, and vinyl was ever present in and around my families house......................................................C
oming to the end of my schoolin days 1987 and Hip Hop came next with the sounds of Big daddy Kane, Public Enemy,BDP, Eric B and Rakim, EPMD, were being played, these were then taped on TDK C90's and swapped between friends.. Name Belts, black 501's, Avia boots and duck down jackets were being wore no matter what time of year it was..
Westwood's "Capital Rap Show" and Dave Pearce's "The Pearce Posse" on Radio London was my biggest sources for tunez, and with a weekly mix and scratch by "Roger Johnson and his wheels of steel...3 tracks got played in the mix this week that proper blew me away.. Rhythim is Rhythim - Nude Photo/The Dance, Stakker Humanoid and A Guy Called Gerald - Voodo Ray. it would be here that a change came about for me, and my love for beats and vinyl, these tracks pushed me in the direction of artists such as Frankie Knuckles, Kevin Saunderson, Robert Owens and Larry Heard, Todd Terry, Pierre's Pfantasy club and Marshall Jefferson...................................................
Now with pockets loaded with my weekly wages, off I trek to the beloved records shops I frequented nearly ever weekend. Colin Dale at Mi Price, Des e G in Goodness, Danny G in the indoor Market, Dave "Cool" in Cloaks, Del at Unity, Dominic in Bluebird, oh and the hippy folk in Beanos. The same faces in these shops every week, all with elbows sharpened and ear's pricked awaiting to hear something new and fresh, and not the dreaded "Sorry mate, that was the last one sold to your man there!!!" (LIAR, you must have some more under that counter!!!)..............................................So between 87 to 1990 I am buying $hit loads of tunez and growing my curtains (Oh those good old days of hair!!) I also go to Ibiza with my pals in 89, wasn't really there for the "Summer of Love" thing, it was as cheap as, and if I'm honest we didnt really notice the big club nights going on (this could well be coz we all spent the whole 2 weeks trying to nail these 4 Scottish birds that were staying at our hotel), but it's nice to say that I was indeed in Ibiza in 1989.. Back in good old blighty, I'd be now sporting Flairs and kickers, Wallabies and floppy hats... it was Centreforce, Fantasy FM and Friends FM locked on the tuner (and by Christ did I have an Ariel in my bedroom).. I'd tell the old dear that I was off night fishing with me mates, and off we'd go and join the M25 rave chaser's on any weekend, never ever with a ticket, South Mimms O'clock, but just to join in the fun trying to actually get to the final destination(SLOUGH!!)................................Camden Palace came next, and EVER Friday night we'd treat ourselves to 4 delightful hours of sounds, supplied by Chris Paul and Dj Squirrel, Great great nights... Plus this would be where I met my Treacle. Ahh Bless her little ravin cottons...Raving I would have it, but always for the the music, and by Christ I was in it!!!!!!!...... the tunez I brought around these times, are some of my most important tracks in my collection..Manix - Manix minds Ep, Nebula II - Sance/Atheama, Hardcore 4 - No sell out, 4 Hero Combat dancin and Cookin up yah, Rufige Cru - Darkrider and Krisp Biscuit, The House Crew - Keep the fire burning, Timebase - Unity/Fireball, 2 Bad Mice - Hold it down/Ware Mouse, also the European soundz of Outlander - Vamp, Second Phase - Mentasm, Joey Beltram - Energy Flash, Human Resource - Dominator, Spectrum - Brazil, Frank De Wulf - B-sides Vols I, II, III, AFX - Analog Bubblebath, Trigger - Statosphere and Wisdom, Destroyer - Senses..and the list just goes on and on..................................................1992 and I get one of the best job's I have ever had.I start working at Big Apple Records in Croydon. My job was to run the upstairs part of the Shop (mind ya head on those fuckin stairs) which sold Hardcore/Drum and Bass, and oh what fun it was. I Met some the most open minded and entertaining people I have ever met in my life through that shop and for that it really was the best'est 3 1/2 working years of my life. Big's to ALL Apple Cru. JOHN, STEVE, GARY, COOKIE, JAK, BAILEY, ARTHUR and JAY, TIGHT!!! each and every time!!!!!!...... So I leave the shop as my musical taste's are were changing yet again, and to try and get "A Proper" job, as I am trying to get set up a home with the Treacle, but I leave with fond memories and some friends for life. In this time i'm playing Local clubs and Playin a weekly show on South London's ENERGY FM, i also have numerous guess shows on Weekend Rush along side Remarc (and Big up all south London Cru, Shout to the Beerdrinks ha ha). Great great days!!!!!!!!! ............................................................
.......... Christ Yawn yawn waffle waffle, i can't believe i've typed this all in one sitting.....................................So from then I get "A PROPER" Job in the city, of which I still work now. I buy a flat out in Essex and plan to wed next year.. Right so between then and nowI started playing Deep House at the Gardening Club and Labyrinth @ the 4 Aces, I played the back room at Bagley's, but it's always been about drum and bass for me and long may it continue.. I still go out and about, Swerve and Herbal, Fabric and various cheesey haunts in and around Essex and Surrey . I still mix and buy tunez, and make tunez for myself on my little bedroom set up of which I enjoy immensely....I also play on LONDON'S CHILLIN 102 FM on Monday nights 8-10pm.. Playing Drum and Bass Upfront N Fresh!, Dark But Soulful!, and 88 - 94 classics!!!!!! Or go to www.chillinlive.com for live streaming worldwide!!! SO where does that bring us to??????? THE FUTURE SOUND OF CROYDON????? I WISH!!! IT'S ALL ABOUT BEING INVOLED WITH SOMETHING YOU LIVE AND LOVE!! PEACE OUT!!!! .................8O) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...................... .........
