HISTORY
What started back in 1980 as an outdoor picnic for 14 altar boys, is today one of Europe's that are formulated conceptionally in the size of the former riding arena. In Haldern quality enjoys higher status than quantity. The media have, for example, often referred to Haldern as being pearl among the European festivals, which is as flattering as the fact that each year 350 journalists are assigned the task of reporting on what was considered to be the long lost freshness of music and its emotional effects. The capital of the festival is, however, the people who, this weekend in August, play music, come to listen or to work behind the scenes. All are pulling in the same direction, invigorated
by a sense of mutual trust and respect. A homogenous cosmos, which is constantly learning from common experience. And the stock exchanges of this world look on in bewilderment, their attempts to exert influence frustrated.
This independence is the basis of Haldern's success. Many of our guests again in 2004 voted for Haldern Pop in German music magazines. Twice second place is ample evidence that quality can indeed count and that it ultimately does have a real chance when pitted against sheer size.
PHILOSOPHY
Who would not have liked to have proof-read the first copy of The Times, to have lent Bobby Charlton his football gear, to have taught John Lennon his first chords on the guitar. To have believed what might happen when you take action. When you dare to recognise something for what it is, allow your enthusiasm to breathe, share your talents with others and their talents, then your desire, your patience might well bear fruit. No amount of ridicule could force Van Gogh from his path into the realm of indifferent populism. His inner self was allowed to bleed onto the canvas, rendering his work inseparable from his personality. His brother Theo was no expert in painting, but he believed in Vincent, was moved by his pictures and supported him with what he needed. Bread, paint and respect.Haldern Pop believes in the unrecognised, hidden and passionate seams embedded
in music, we love the game of surprise and the joy it contains. Any discussion
about quality is subjective, our criteria are without doubt both irrational and very personal. The result reflects the sum of all those who are a part of us. We aren't aiming to break any world records, and yet the voice of economics can certainly be heard its mantra isreality. Which makes the whole business all the more challenging. We invest because we believe. If we knew, our days would be numbered. Our lives too.
