Gary Melton
"My approach to teaching and scholarship in Journalism and Mass Communication reflects a unique blend of practice and theory. The outcome of this approach is that students will have the opportunity to make significant gains in skills and knowledge."
HSU professor Melton remembered by Diane M. Batley, 9/30/2005 Gary Melton, a Humboldt State University journalism and mass communication professor who had a positive impact on many, died from cancer at his home on Tuesday.“(Gary’s death) was as good as it could be under the circumstances,” his wife, Jill Melton, said.Jill and son Jason were by his side, and Gary was listening to Paul McCartney’s new album, “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard,” she said.Gary would like that title, Jill said.A get-well CD with messages from former students was also played for Gary on Tuesday.“(Gary’s) gotten so many wonderful letters and cards and CDs. It’s been very nice,” Jill said.Gary began teaching at HSU in 1989 in the department of speech communication. He was permanently reassigned to the department of journalism and mass communication in 1998.He started HSU’s student-run radio station KRFH-AM in 1990, which helped many students get their starts in the media business.“He did not want to leave that radio station,” Jill said. “He loved teaching.”“The student radio station was begun as a way to give students the opportunity with entry-level radio skills as opposed to KHSU which needs a little higher level skill performance,” said professor Mark Larson, chairman of the journalism and mass communication department. “Gary not only created KRFH as a wonderful opportunity for students but made it a safe and effective radio station. It was great to see that emerge under his guidance.”Students loved Gary’s interest in music and particularly his love for the Beatles, Larson said.Gary loved music and was a musician himself.“Gary had many plans for the future both with his teaching, especially with his music,” Larson said. “It seems very sad to have those plans interrupted.”Larson said his thoughts are particularly focused on Jill and Jason. Many people can tell stories of how Gary affected their lives.HSU broadcast journalism student Peter Brewer had Gary as a teacher for three semesters beginning in the fall of 2003.“Gary was a great person,” Brewer said. “You couldn’t ask for a better teacher than Gary.”When Brewer came to HSU, he signed up for KRFH and immediately fell in love with every aspect of radio and the student-run radio philosophy that everyone has different tastes and can play what they want on the air.“Gary started the station and the impact that he had on all of us was incredible,” Brewer said. “He loved music and he loved putting the power of the music in the hands of the students and letting us run with it.”It was terrible to hear that Gary would not be coming back to the station, he said.“The enrollment has decreased pretty significantly in KRFH and some of us are worried about the station,” Brewer said. “We hope it doesn’t fade out.”He doesn’t think that it will. Some of the people whose lives were affected by Gary are now local media employees who were once his students.Mike Dronkers, KHUM-FM disc jockey and program director for KHUM and KSLG, was a student of Melton’s from 1996 to 1999.“I would not have gone into radio if it were not for him,” Dronkers said.Gary built the KRFH facility from the ground up and he set up a forum where students could learn radio, make mistakes and be experimental, he said.“He would always go to bat for the students,” Dronkers said.Known for his love of the Beatles, Melton would often discuss the band in his classes and he had many posters of the group hanging in his office.Dronkers ran a Gary Melton memorial tribute on his KHUM program this past week, which included many Beatles songs.“He was a music guy,” Dronkers said.J.B. Mathers, news and sports director for Bicoastal Media, became a student of Gary’s in the fall of 1998. Gary was also his adviser.“Gary was great,” Mathers said. “(He) was really supportive of everybody.”Mathers credits Gary with helping him get his start in radio.“If I did not meet Gary, I highly doubt I would be in radio,” he said.Carole Morgal, production assistant with Bicoastal Media, was a student of Gary’s from 1995 to 2000.She wouldn’t have her job in media if it weren’t for Gary, she said.“He was probably the only reason I got through college, because KRFH was something to stick with,” Morgal said.Gary was an inspiration and one of the funniest men she’s ever known, she said.“He had great quirks and great sayings,” Morgal said.Jill called these sayings his “Garyisms.”When someone was doing something wrong on KRFH and Gary and the person would have to discuss it, Gary would say that, “It’s a one-on-one anti-social interaction,” Morgal said.Other Garyisms noted included, “That was an aesthetically pleasing cross-fade,” Dronkers said.“He was a great friend to all of his students,” Morgal said. “It was seriously because of him that I chose to be in journalism. Gary made me laugh and I thought I wanted to take every class that he offered and I did.”Gary would have turned 53 on Oct. 20.“‘Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans’ as said by John Lennon,” Jill said.
