Perhaps it’s the idea of being successful. The laps, the drills, the sweat. Its why we do theses things, to be remembered as one. The pressure and poise in the middle of the chaos, the funny feeling when your hair stands up on your neck, as the stadium rises. Like a book, the hook brings you back. Running around in circles and killing our bodies like mad men, its just another day. The gallons of water wasted to cover our weakness, an the voice in our heads telling us we can do more. I’m tired of saying “maybe tomorrow will be different”. NO! tomorrow will be different, I don’t need any pity, and I don’t need a promised help, if I was to fall down. No not today. Just give me my boys, put us on the 50 yard line. Put 10 seconds on that clock. Watch the eyes grow of my teammates as the coach calls the play. Give me the crowd and the critics in a mix of mob. Booing and cheering, give me cries, give me whistles. As I get in stance, and see the satisfaction on my face on the reflection from my opponents eyes. Knowing what am about to do, is just part of the cycle of something bigger. Its not just a trophy, or exposure. it’s a relief, a break from normal life. Seeing the raised lip on coach nyhacoon, josh lafond jumping in the stands, the grin on Kyle Joe sweezers face, the gladiatorial mood on Dan the man. Brownies belly dance, to Duffy’s right demented nipple. And everything else that makes a football team. Captured in memory, by a ring.
